Stationary Bike instead of Running?
 
My asthma is getting pretty bad again lately due to season change so running is not something i can do right now but I still want to catch up on cardio. I tried stationary biking today and that does not rile up my asthma as bad as running (rode 10 miles). I was wondering can you get the same amount of cardio out of a bike instead of running? I am 6'1 195lbs, how much do I have to ride in terms of distance/time to get a good result out of biking (want to get rid of some belly fat). Thanks

biking doesn't really get rid of belly fat.. atleast it didn't work for me for 6 months riding to work and back each day.

i've seen some pretty fat people ride a bike for years and never got rid of a gut.

however... situps got rid of a gut for me.. but as soon as i stopped the gut came back.

Your asthma is going to bother you no matter what if you're doing cardio right. The stationary bike isn't a magic machine that lets you get all the results of running with half of the work.

Bikes require less work than running. Really, the only cardio that compares to running is swimming, and ellipticals (if you do them correctly).

It's very hard to match the calories/hour of running. :o

You're going to have to bike balls to the walls to burn anywhere near the same number of calories as running, but if asthma makes it so you can't run, biking is better than nothing. At least you're burning some calories.

Swimming is pretty much the only thing that can compete with running when it comes to calories burned.

edit: this is calculated for my body weight, but you can plainly see the calorie difference. (calories burned per 1/2hour)

Thanks, I will get back to running once the weather completely changes. I will have to try the biking for now. Better than nothing I guess.

Btw according to the bike it says I am only burning like 100 cal for 1/2 hour of riding at 19 mph, that can't be correct can it?

Depending on the resistance, that sounds about right.

well when i ride the bike at home i never go under 20 MPH and the resistance is set at 30 out of 60. I'm sweating just about as much as if i jog at at a good pace on the treadmill. It does not even seem that fast. 12-14 MPH is basically fuck all. it feels like less work than walking.

If you really want to get in shape you should be doing some weight training along with this, it burns calories too.

If he really wants to get in shape he should make sure his diet is in check. If your diets good enough you can be in shape and not even exercise (not that this is recommended).

Right, stationary bikes are definitely not as efficient at burning calories as running or swimming. But if you can only bike for now, throw in some bodyweight exercises (pushups, dips, pullups, situps) and you should be good until you can start running,

I currently use the stationary bike instead of running.

I dont really have a choice, im coming off of ACL surgery and I cant quite run yet. If you encorporate hills or customize an HIIT type biking regiment, you can still burn some good calories.

Obviously, like everyone else is saying, it doesnt compare to running, but I wouldnt let that stop you. I was trying to lose weight before I tore my ACL, so I kept dieting/biking/lifting after surgery, and I've lost 15 lbs in 2 months via this method.

yes, you can - but if you are riding the bike in a way that you are getting the "same amount of cardio" out of the bike as you did with your running workout, then you will be breathing the SAME as you were during your running workout

if you are on the bike and are not breathing as hard as you were while you were running, then you will not get the same benefit from biking as from running - this is because you just aren't working as hard

don't be lazy - don't use the bike as an excuse to not work as hard

"oh i biked 10 miles today!" well, if you didn't break a sweat or start breathing hard while you did it, then it was for shit


honestly - if your asthma is really, truly the issue here, then why not just run at the pace right below where your asthma gives you problems?
