If he really wants to get in shape he should make sure his diet is in check. If your diets good enough you can be in shape and not even exercise (not that this is recommended).

Right, stationary bikes are definitely not as efficient at burning calories as running or swimming. But if you can only bike for now, throw in some bodyweight exercises (pushups, dips, pullups, situps) and you should be good until you can start running,
