Can anyone with Spiderman 2 on a UMD, and isn't afraid of damaging it, can try this?

Crack open the shell that holds the UMD disc inside.

Insert the small disc in your PC's dvd drive.

Does it read itas an mp4 movie? full file structure and all?

just curious about the copy protection sony uses and how long it will withstand the bright minds of todays hackers.

UMDs support 128bit encyption, so probably not. Doubt you'll be able to read them on a pc

A friend of mine cracked his open. Not sure about the results but I'm pretty sure he'd have come in yelling 'I hacked the gibson!!!1' if it had worked.

The UMD discs are smaller than the mini-cd's apparantly.

The hole in the center is too small... A standard DVD drive wont even be able to spin the disk.

Chances are you'll need to write a program to pull the data straight off the PSP via USB cable. I doubt that will be happening any time soon - but then, people WERE able to copy GBA titles. It's like an intriguing new puzzle for the hacking community. It's only a matter of time.

Maybe a visual aid will help:

Notice that the hole is smaller. Not only would you have to remove the metal center of the UMD (it's attached to the disk not the plastic casing), but you would also have to make the center hole bigger... which would be very tricky to do without damaging the disk and it would most likely make the disk unevenly balanced (unstable when spun up).

A slot loading would be even worse because you can't use ANYthing but the standard size discs. Otherwise they get stuck.

The term "hacker" is so .... stupid.

People that do copyright cracking and emulation of various systems are generally programmers who wanted to learn how the system worked. It generally starts off as a side project just to prove they can do it. It's not anything against "the man" or to spite video game companies/help the pirate community. Most people release pirated versions of software in hopes that you will actually PAY (*gasp*) for it if you like it, not to just get something for free.

People that don't pay and just horde software titles are the fuckers that break this little underground system of try before you buy.
