III. Why you should eat more pies.
a. Patriotism
i. Little do people know that pies are one of the original American symbols being present at practically every special celebration and holiday such as Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
ii. Even more symbolic of the American culture is the apple pie. John Mariani states in The Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink, “If something is said to be as "American as apple pie," it is credited with being as American as "The Star Spangled Banner." In fact, apples were brought from Europe to America, and apple pies (1780) were very popular in Europe, especially in England, before they came to epitomize Amerian food.” Peter Wynne also says in Apples: History, Folklore, Horticulture, and Gastronomy,” “The expression "as American as apple pie" wasn't the product of an overzealous imagination. Apple dishes of one kind or another could be found at practically every colonial meal, especially in New England. The apple was made into pies and fritters and puddings and slumps, literally a host of dishes.”
b. The memories
i. The times when pies are present are probably the most happy and cheerful times in one’s life. For example, 4th of July, Independence day. One is with their family, friends, and loved ones while having a great time not having to worry about school or work. Enjoying the fireworks and festivities while eating some pie. Having some pie everyday will most likely bring back those happy memories even if only for a short amount of time. So, the more pie one eats, the longer one stays happy.
c. Treatment for depression
i. In addition to bringing back fond memories, I believe that pie is an effective and easy way to treat sadness or depression. [Since when was the last time you’ve seen someone eating pie look sad?] In fact, Katy Leary, who was Mark Twain’s life-long housekeeper, helped him with his depression as she wrote in her book about Twain: “She ordered a pie every morning, she said, recalling a period in which Twain was depressed. ‘Then I'd get a quart of milk and put it on the ice, and have it all ready - the huckleberry pie and the cold milk - about one o'clock. He eat half the huckleberry pie, anyway, and drink all the milk.’” So apparently, pie was the only thing Mark Twain was willing to eat for lunch! So instead of spending huge amount of money on drugs, try some pie first.
ii. Also, for many years raisin pie was served with the meal prepared for family and friends at the wake following a funeral. This pie traditionally is served at funerals of Old Order Mennonites and Amish.
d. ‘Cause the universe says so
i. Carl Jung, a famous Swiss psychologist, came up with a theory called synchronicity. The definition of synchronicity, from Wikipedia, “is a word created by the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung to describe the alignment of "universal forces" with the life experiences of an individual. Jung believed that many experiences perceived as coincidences were not merely due to chance, but instead reflected the creation of an event or circumstance by the "co-inciding" or alignment of such forces.” This means that so-called coincidences, in Jungian psychology, are not coincidences at all but universal connections. In relations to pies, now, if we actively become more aware of coincidences, or synchronicities, I believe that the universe is telling all of us to eat pies all the time. For example, if you pay enough attention, you should be able to see pie connections everywhere such as the coincidental verbal pronunciation of mathematical symbol pi, English 114’s acronymic P.I.E. worksheets which stands for “Point, Information, and Explanation,” pie charts, and the pie shape of many everyday and not-so-everday objects, I believe is the way the universe, according to Jungian psychology, is telling us to eat more pies
e. Peer pressure
i. It is commonly known that most people tend to fall into peer pressure, especially to those with high societal statuses such as celebrities or high profile people. We all try to resist the urge to conform but may, once in awhile, slip under the current and buy that shirt everyone is wearing or change your hairstyle to that of your favorite celebrity after in which one tends to feel overall guilty but with some satisfaction. Why not receive 100% satisfaction by falling under the “celebrities’ love for pies” peer pressure, or what I’d like to call pie pressure?
1. Example #1: The Beatles have a song called Wild Honey Pie on the first disc of the White Album in which they sing the words “honey pie” over and over again. It obviously, in my opinion, expresses their love for honey pie—so much that they made a song about it.
a. The Pixies also did a cover of this song, again, in my opinion, showing their love for pies and honey pie in general.
2. Example #2: Carl Sagan, the great astronomer, award winning author, and writer of the popular movie, Contact, wrote and hosted public televisions most watched series, Cosmos which later became a book. In the television miniseries, Cosmos, its starts out showing the process of making an apple pie wherein Carl Sagan eventually says “To make apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.” Out of all the possible analogous comparisons to creation, he chose to use a pie. Evidently, I believe that Carl Sagan loved pies.
3. Example #3: Superman, the man of steel, one of the most popular and greatest superheroes of all time. He would reward himself after saving the world, yet again, by going back to his farm in Smallville where he savors his mother’s homemade pies.
ii. So if you want to be a rockstars like the Beatle or the Pixies, an amazingly influential astronomer like Carl Sagan, or be the world’s greatest superhero, happily volunteer to fall under the “pie pressure” and start eating more pies now. And don’t worry how other will perceive after you’ve fallen under the pressure, if you’ve done it right, there won’t be any evidence.
