so i just took a bunch. i had no real fill flash, nothing to bounce light off of, and it was getting dark.

so forgive the harsh shadows (especially #1, its a bit of a problem).

also, low quality jpgs, sorry.

anyway, just figured i'd share

composition-wise, I like 1 and 3. I think 3 is probably my favorite of the bunch. For 5, I'm torn between whether I like the fact that there's a blurred branch in the middle of the picture.... I think I'm leaning more towards not liking it since it's so apparent... if it was just an edge, the effect might work better.
I agree that the last one she looks nervous or uncomfortable. It also looks out of focus. Make sure you focus on the eyes, and I think they seem a little desaturated as well.

Nice work

People crossing their arms like that makes them look uncomfortable. It's a very defensive pose. Look out for that kind of stuff. She would have looked a lot more confident in some of these if you could just see her hands or if she was in a more natural pose.

she wasnt

edit: and i tried to have her put her arms in a couple of different positions, but I think she felt uncomfortable with her shirt hanging open or something, so...

oh well i guess, they'll be good for their purpose

edit 2: like i was above her, taking pictures down just to try something new, and she made some comment like "your gonna get pictures down my shirt!" and i thoguth she was kidding, but she ended up holding her arms across her chest/etc the entire time (as seen in the last photo). oh well!

If you're taking photos for something like an application, you do not want to shoot down on the person. It'll make them seem weaker, because they're looking up. It's a psychological thing. Also, as soon as she said she wasn't comfortable with it you should have changed where you were shooting from. The most important thing, especially for something like this, is that the model is comfortable and confident... Confident pictures are better for applications. Just some tips

by application, i mean winter carnival queen application (not for a job)

but i deffinetly agree with you, and thank you for the tips - in general, i dont do many "portraits", as i fail at making people comfortable, as i'm always so uptight - so i just ran with it

Ah ok, I guess that is a different kind of application then

I think that making people comfortable is something you get better at with experience, as you shoot more and more people. I sucked at it at first, I'm still not great, but better than before. It does seem like recently people have been starting to look more comfortable in my shots.

I think that there would have been a great shot looking upward at her, a mish mash of 1 and 3 would be great, and the hands comment is another good one. she is kinda hot too.
