Vatican Official Refutes Intelligent Design

"The Vatican's chief astronomer said Friday that "intelligent design" isn't science and doesn't belong in science classrooms, the latest high-ranking Roman Catholic official to enter the evolution debate in the United States.

The Rev. George Coyne, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, said placing intelligent design theory alongside that of evolution in school programs was "wrong" and was akin to mixing apples with oranges.

"Intelligent design isn't science even though it pretends to be," the ANSA news agency quoted Coyne as saying on the sidelines of a conference in Florence. "If you want to teach it in schools, intelligent design should be taught when religion or cultural history is taught, not science."

Wow. Some common sense from the Vatican

I'm surprised that such a high-ranking Vatican official would be so bold (for example, they mention in the article John Paul II's '96 comment where he said "evolution is more than just a hypothesis,") with a view that's bound to be controversial among his peers, but I'm glad to see that he did.

Catholics have actually been very reasonable regarding science for decades now.

my mom is super catholic but both her and my dad are very logical scientific people (my dad was unitarian universalist). my mom doesnt believe every little thing the church does, but for the most part, there is hardly any "clash" between science and her religion

Absolutely. Needless to say the Catholic Church has a much wider audience to think about than Billy Joe Bob's Church of Eternal Denial.

Yep, right on cue. Xayd denying that Democrats are godboy sheep too. You're like SamFarber denying white crime. And just as dumb...

The Catholic Church has been doing a lot of good things lately... and astronomy? Hmm, Christians have often denied other planets even exist. Maybe the 2 have finally split. Then again, when was the last you heard of a boy touching scandal? I get the feeling Pope benedict is running things. As good as John Paul looked, he was generally asleep at the wheel most of his career.

I went to a Jesuit school for 5 years and never once had anybody try and push anything other than accepted, mainstream science on me.

I think the Catholic church is paranoid about not being seen as modern, so they wouldn't want to go against science on this.

edit: I got turned down by a catholic lass today. This thread reminds me

seriously, more people should think like that. intelligence is marked by the ability to entertain an idea without believing in it.
