A MALE teacher who performed naked cartwheels in front of young female students during a school camp has been jailed for five months.

Warren David Schneider, 37 of Brisbane, pleaded guilty in the Queensland District Court to seven counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16 years under care.

He was sentenced today to 15 months' jail suspended after five months.

The court was told Schneider was an art teacher at a private school in Brisbane's south when he committed a series of sexual offences during 2002 against three girls, all of whom were then in Year 7 and aged 12.

Crown prosecutor Maita Aylward said during a school camp at Moreton Island in October 2002, Schneider caught two of the girls sneaking out of their tent at night before taking them to his tent where he gave them bourbon and initiated a game of "truth or dare".

After the girls refused a dare to go down to a nearby beach and take their clothes off, he gave the dare to himself, Ms Aylward said.

Despite it being dark at the beach they could still see he was naked as he performed cartwheels, the court heard.

"They were quite shocked by this ... he said it was nothing to be ashamed of," Ms Aylward told the court.

In another incident during the camp, Schneider put on a pair of girl's underwear and told the girls he was "going to come in them", Ms Aylward said.

The court also heard he had dared one of the girls to kiss him and when she refused he asked "why not?" – only for her to reply "because you are a teacher".

Ms Aylward said offences began earlier in 2002 after he started ordering the girls to sit at the bottom of the school oval where they played "truth or dare".

During these games he dared one of them to reveal the colour of her underwear and also dared himself to walk around with his fly undone.

He had also asked the girls during an after school maths lesson what "frigid" meant before depicting the four stages of "frigidity" on the blackboard using stick figures in promiscuous and sexual poses.

One of the girls said he had also "grabbed their arses" and pulled their bra straps in the school's dark photography room, Ms Aylward said.

Defence solicitor Frank Lippett likened his client's "immature behaviour" to a "pubescent male".

He said Schneider's marriage had collapsed, his career had been "irretrievably lost" and he was now employed in the bar industry in a position of "far less status".

Judge Michael Shanahan said Schneider had "abused his position of trust as a teacher and breached trust placed on him by the complainants, their parents and the school while they were in his care".

Judge Shanahan said Schneider would undertake counselling as part of the state's sex offenders program.
