Months of work down the drain...

Well here is a great reminder to ALWAYS check your ebrake cable. Got a call from my best friend a few hours ago, said I should stop by and look at something on his car, not uncommon.

Back history-
Car was built this summer. New paint, new rims, new tires, custom streetported motor, 5spd, striped interior, full exhaust, nice intake, no emissions, just a nice clean second gen mazda Rx7.

Anyways. Its dark, I get there, I notice his exhaust hanging a little low, walk up and feel a small dent around the gas filler... Well ouch. Not bad. Dont walk around to the other side mind you.... I almost shit myself when I walked back out with a flashlight and him. Front fender hit, door smashed, rear QP hit, front passenger fender hit, tail lamps busted out, bumper ripped off on the drivers side. Exhaust torn off the welds, swaybar broken. Front and rear. Now here is where it gets good. He was driving home, pissed the f
off, worse time to be driving, and ebrake slides into the driveway. This is what gets me...
He gets into the drive way, parks, gets out, and goes upstairs. His mother is SCREAMING for him, running down the stairs, nearly knocks him over. The ebrake cable snapped, releasing the car down their steep driveway. She was hanging lights off their balcony and thought he was still in the car. The car parked it self between 2 posts, a lamp pole, and bamboo trees. Needless to say its fucked.

So always check your ebrake cable, its the ONE thing we never did on the car. Looks like it was 1/2 chewed through already.

Pictures tomorrow, as he had his digital camera stolen out of the car 2 days earlier .

I very rarely put my car in gear when I park, although I almost always park on a flat surface. The worst that would happen is it would roll a few feet into another car and cause an unnoticeable amount of damage.

Yeah really, you sure your buddy didnt crash his car and then make up this story, or "forget" to secure the car properly?

Dumb not to park with it in gear and with the parking brake on. No reason not too.

when i park a stick I always put it in first, reverse if the nose is downhill...i dont trust some thin rusty cable to keep an entire vehicle from rolling...sucks about your friend's car though.

I know his family and him pretty damn well. When the mom is STILL white as a ghost 15minutes after it happened, there are tire tracks, and the bushes are all broken up, it happened.

It his a curb first and then I {think) thats where the steel water meter boxes/pipes are. It was all aftermarket stuff too

No I don't doubt that the car rolled, I'm just wondering if there was any damage before that happened. It sounds like an aweful lot just due to a car rolling away, but then again I dont know what the terrain looks like.

qft

I learned this when I went to subway, with my first car ever (truck) which started to roll back slowly after I got out, in the parking lot. It's e-brake was out of adjustemnt, and i fixed it later, but I had to leave it in reverse that time and it stayed.

So yeah always leave it in 1st or reverse, depending which way you would be more likely to roll. Leaving it in neutral is asking for trouble.

Actually, I tend to keep any car w/ a man tranny in the highest gear available. 4th or 5th see the least wear as shifting into them hard rarely happens, also if you do manage to start the car on accident there is no way it won't stall as soon as your foot comes off the clutch.

That makes no sense. Also in higher gears it will turn the motor over, as opposed to not rolling.

Always use 1 or reverse
