A plastic bag containing a human torso was found Saturday morning on a street in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo.

The victim was believed to be a young adult male, the police said.
Efforts were under way to identify the victim. Police said they believe he was Japanese or from another Asian country.
The police said the victim apparently died a few days earlier, and a small amount of mud was found on the upper torso.
The bag was found at around 8 a.m. on a roadside near JR Shinjuku Station by a worker at a nearby vocational training school. He reported to the police that something looking like a mannequin was inside a whitish bag and it could be a body.
No signs of serious bleeding were found around the location where the bag was found, leading police to suspect the victim was killed at another location and abandoned there.
They believe the body was dismembered with a cutting tool such as a handsaw.
The plastic bag was discovered near the JR Yamanote Line in an area with office buildings and vocational schools. On the other side of the tracks is Kabukicho, one of the nation's largest nightlife districts.

Traces of dirt on torso offer clues about killing

A small trace of dirt found on a mutilated torso dumped in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, early Saturday morning has tipped investigators to the possibility the body part had been placed on the ground before being put into the garbage bag in which it was found.

The police also interviewed a number of nearby residents, confirming that no one had noticed the naked torso until a passerby spotted it shortly after 7 a.m. Saturday.

With the new evidence, investigators from Shinjuku Police Station began examining the dirt in the hope of determining when the torso had been dumped.

The bag was found near a curb close to the elevated JR Yamanote Line tracks in Nishi-Shinjuku in the ward.

An autopsy showed the torso was that of a man in his 20s about 1.7 meters tall, and that the victim had been dead for up to three days. There was no sign of damage to his bones or internal organs, and the cause of his death remained a mystery. As there was no food in his stomach, it is believed he died more than two hours after his last meal. The police also have determined it highly likely the body was mutilated after the man died.
