quite the eventful roadtrip
Ok so I've never had this much crap happen to me before, I've seen/had some crazy experiences but this roadtrip owns all. I just finished my first semester of Automotive Technology in Calgary. I decided I would fly back up to Yellownife, NT and help my dad pack up a 1 ton Triton V10 U-haul. Even though we arn't spending Christmas in Yellownife - I wanted to help my dad drive down considering the drive is 1476 miles or 2361km's long
First of all let this U-haul my dad rented is a total piece of shit, it has 175,000 miles on it and I definately didn't trust the truck by the looks of it so I brought tools just in case. We made it 500 km's and the transmission started acting up, the overdrive light kept on flicking at us and it was only able to climb steep hills at about 60 km/h. Not to mention the truck was hestitaing quite badly at times. I checked all the fluid level knowing thats about all I could do and everything was alright. While we were driving south we picked up my car in Calgary, as I had to do some other errands around Alberta over x-mas and didn't want my dad driving me 8 hours west just to drop me off. Anyways, as we were leaving a Saskatoon gas station the U-haul sounded extremely shitty so my dad popped the hood. Keep in mind he knows absolutely nothing about vehicles. I jumped on the bumper to figure out what was going on the number 1 cylinder was stripped right out of the head, he was quite happy to have me there fixing the problem. We went into town to pick up a 5/8th deep socket to put a new spark plug back in, as I was leaving the Canadian Tire parking lot a new Audi A6 rear ends my Jetta. He didn't cause any damage to my car, but his front bumper was dented in pretty good. We traded information and concluded immediately it was his fault. I felt lucky seeing as my bumper is completely plastic! We get back to the U-haul and to my suprise the spark plug hole wasn't stripped, but the old spark plug was itself . I thought we'd have to heli-coil the head or worse. The u-haul started right back up and we found that to be the reason for some of the hestiation earlier on the trip. The transmission is still messed up but whatever. Thinking this was going to be the end to all our bad luck, we seen the horrible aftermath on the other side of a dual carriage highway. An older car was basically t-boned by a semi.. We passed by slowly and seen 10-15 firefighters using the jaws of life to open the car up. My dad didn't want to stick around knowing the people were probably dead.. I don't blame him. Im so exhausted we got back about an hour ago and it took us 24 hours to make it. We stopped once in Llyodminister to sleep in our vehicles for a few hours (worst sleep of my entire life). Other than that we only stopped for a quick bite to eat, gas refills, or washroom breaks. In the end we made 300 kms to a tank of gas in the beasty ford. Each fill up costing from 100-120 dollars. After the spark plug was replaced the effieciency went up dramatically. We drop the piece of shit off tomorrow and we expect a full refund with all the trouble we had with this thing, and hopefully a discount on the amount of gas we had to buy. Booo on ford ecolines..

BOO on UHAUL
I have heard WAYYYYYY too many fuckin horror stories about uhaul they provide absolute junk vehicles and equipment personally I have had 2 bad experiences and have several friends with bad experiences. That would be a pretty cool trip up north though. Furthest I've been is still about 3 hours drive from NWT

my uncle drove from Denver to Berkeley in a UHAUL van without any real problems, so they aren't always horrible. this was several years ago though.

We drive a V10 triton box truck at work, and it seems to have given us almost no problems, even after we filled the thing with UPS and servers once so the rear bumper was almost dragging the ground.

My uncle once rented a UHAUL truck years ago, and he literally drove it about 1 mile and the first turn he took one of the wheels fell off! My friend works for Ryder and hes always making fun of how shitty and poorly maintained UHAUL trucks are.

well i've left yellowknife about 10 times in total now, its an extremely boring drive until you reach the middle of Alberta. The most interesting thing you'll see in the NT is hundreds of Buffalo. Where abouts were you up north? I'll keep you updated on what the u-haul dude has to say when we tell him we want our money back.

I was wondering if I was the only one to notice such shitty condition UHaul keeps their vehicles in. We had one rented to move my stupid ex-OMGOMGOMGOMG about 60 miles, and the damned truck started overheating when it had to go uphill. I'm not sure how many gears it was supposed to have, but I only counted 3.

The closest I've been is a region called Pink Mountain in North-eastern BC. I think the sign said I was about 1100km from Whitehorse, and as far as I know its about 3 hours from the NWT border.
