Post Your Local Hidden Gem

Hey All,

I've resolved to travel more this year, so in the spirit of sharing local insider information, post your local hidden gem's from your hometown.

Here are mine from Chicagoland & Milwaukee...I'm in Jacksonville now, but I hate it here, so nothing from there.

Gullivers Pizza - Far Northside (Rogers Park) on Howard.
Best deep dish pizza in town, puts Malnatti's, Giordano's, and Gino's East to shame. Place has been in business for generations, when it was started the owners combed the midwest for all the old mansions that were being torn down. They ripped out all the chendelliers, cherubs, and all the ornate marble antiques and stacked their restaurant to the rafters with it. This place is truly an experience.

Guthries Tavern - Addison Street, Wrigleyville. Great beer, great place to meet up with friends. Real low key, and they have board games to play with your crew late into the night.

Cafe Babareeba - This one's pretty well known, but fun none the less. Its Tapas, meant to share with friends before checking out a play. IT IS LOUD in here because of all the people in close quarters

Milwaukee....god I loved this town, and miss it so.

Pasta Tree - on Farwell, kind of hard to find. Talk about the ultimate cozy date place. REALLY close quarters, amazing food. Twin lobster tails my favorite though.

Genghis Khan Mongolian Barbeque - $8 for the best mongolian barbeque, great meat (even have Lamb!) and its UNLIMITED BOWLS. Guess when you're on Highway 100 by Bluemound out way west, you have to attract the crowd. Well worth the trip, this place was probably my FAVORITE restaurant in Milwaukee for daily lunch/dinner (I worked in Brookfield).

Pizza Man - Great pizza...and *EVEN BETTER* wine list! Check out their levy/pull door. The patio's still my favorite area to eat though.

Roots Restaurant I used to live right up the street from here. This restaurant is built into a large incline (Brewers Hill) and the patio dining area and window seats have probably one of the best views of the entire skyline. Great place to watch the blue angels for the air/water show

Speed D Queen Barbeque Shady part of town on Pleasant, but damn...ribs are so good. Best part is the wonder bread to sop up all the sauce

Ujala Palace or Ujala Tandoor...whatever the name of the week is - this dive of a Pakistani restaurant on Mitchell Ave way on the south side has the best Nihari outside of my mothers kitchen. No alcohol, of course, but the food is where its at. Goes to show you that it pays to eat at where the cabbies eat...as long as you dont look in the kitchen This place is damn near impossible to find, their sign is a dry erase board thats in the window...when its humid, the condensation wipes out the board along with the name of the restaurant. I miss milwaukee for places like this...Wisconsin crew is lucky beyond belief.

Jewel of India - Great Indian food, a bit pricey for dinner, but very awesome location on Third Streed (old world) right by Have a nice day and Buckheads (I think).

Fine, I hate Jacksonville, but here's a couple I think are ok

Mezza Luna In town Neptune Beach. A block from the ocean, and right across from Pete's Bar (of John Grisham - The Bretheren fame). GREAT fresh bread, decent food.

Caps on the Water Pull your boat up on the dock and have some of the best grouper I've ever had.

Biscotties - It amazes me how good this restaurant is food and atmosphere wise, and how badly the same owners screwed up BB's which has the same menu but in San Marco. Guess it goes to show you that the neighborhood is what makes a restaurant great sometimes. I *HATE* San Marco, that pretentious piece of swamp soil on the West Side of the river. Long live Avondale/Riverside

The Brick - Good Lambchops....good wine. Also in Avondale.

THe Whalebone Tavern - A bit of a dive bar in Five Points/Riverside, but this place used to be a restaurant, and I think the chef still dreams about it. Their bar food is UNREAL good.

As I think of more, I'll post

My town has a cafe, a gas station, a bar, a tavern and a grocery store.
I guess the only one that would qualify is the tavern. It's over 100 years old and still running. It used to have a brothel in the upstairs.
