Odd problem with Dlink router (spotty access to outside world)

My friend and I are trying to get his network connected to the internets through a router. The router in question is a D-Link 524. We are on a university campus network, so we have a static IP to the outside and are essentially connected to a LAN. I know in some US colleges having routers on the school network is not allowed, but that is not the case here. A similar setup works quite fine at my own apartment, and in any case we have narrowed down the problem to the router.

Cables have been tested, and the internet works great when connected directly to the outside world. But here is the strange thing - while internet access is spotty when connected through the router, especially when dealing with large files and network shares on the campus network - everything, network shares, you name it, works great with the computer in the DMZ of the router.

To me this indicates a problem in the router's firewall, but even after a hard reset of the device, the same problem behavior happens. So even with the factory firewall settings, it doesnt work.

The default firewall settings look like this:

Code:
Allow	Ping WAN port	WAN,*	WAN,*	ICMP,*
Deny	Default *,*	LAN,*	*,*
Allow	Default LAN,*	*,*	*,*
I know the first response is going to be "update firmware noob." The firmware is allready the newest version.

Any ideas? We are totally stumped

What version firmware are you running? Make sure that you applied the proper firmware for your revision of the device. It could be possible that you applied the wrong firmware for that router.

Check HERE

We didnt apply any firmware to it, as the factory installed firmware was allready the newest version.

I have the same experience with mine, but atleast it (and yours) works. My friend's doesnt even work properly in a reasonable and perfectly common enviroment and setup.

Well, we ended up trading it in towards a better (read different brand) router. Stay away from dlink
