MS Office 2003 vs. Office 2007...

I'm going to be getting a new laptop soon (Dell Latitude D820) and Dell currently has the option of selecting between Office 2003 and Office 2007 and I'm just wondering- can the Office 2007 interface/menus for apps like Microsoft Word be changed to Office 2003 style? I ask because I've opened up MS Word on a system with 2007 installed and I really didn't like the interface. :/

Also is there anything of importance that Office 2007 has that 2003 does not? How about features for MS Word and Outlook? Word and Outlook are really the only two Office apps I use so are there any new features in these two apps for 2007?

Thanks in advance!

Office 2007 introduced a new XML based file format. I think you can get plugins for 2003 and older to work with the new format but I'm not sure.

I personally like office 2007 a lot. Easier to work with.

You might say "I don't want to learn the new way," but it's really not that hard. Most things are intuitive and easy to figure out, and thus become habit.

Try getting used to the 2007 interface, it IS a big change, but a lot of things are much easier to access and you may even find features you didnt even know were there.

It took me the writing of perhaps two documents in Word to get adjusted. It's pretty intuitive, and kicks total ass. I've actually started using IE7, too; just keeping it in the family and the interface is pretty easy to use.

2007 is all eye candy, the new improvements are only good for someone that knows what they are doing. like the security encrypted thing, big whoop u can throw ur word docs in an encrypted zip, to teach a whole office all the new little things is just not worth it.

im replying without reading the whole thread, just writing in relation to my job, personally i hate MS products therefore: open office > MS office

The sweetest part is being able to save a document that is compatible with office 97-03

I've been using Office 2007 for about a month now and it's actually made writing papers (a task I hate doing) somewhat enjoyable. It's not only pretty but the new interface has made it much more streamlined. I'd suggest just giving it a try, it's not hard at all to switch between the two.

Yeah, research papers become almost bearable with pretty things to look at. That's one of the things I've enjoyed about Office 2007.

NO

The biggest improvement is the INTERFACE, which actually makes it somewhat easy for non-savvy people to find stuff.

Most of the office feature requests microsoft have gotten over the last years have been about features that already exist... it's just that nobody could find them in the old UI.

thats kinda what i meant, Its all eye candy -> referring to the UI. the other improvements that im talking about is mostly the file formats and security options that are built-in. making the file default with a .xdc file or something instead of a simple .doc gave my IT team a big head ache because secretaries didnt know wtf they were doing. and some of the administration thought it was asking for their personal password to encrypt their files and when they send them around no one else can open it. it was quite a nightmare
