So I made that cheap studio box....

...and I like it!

that's the box!

Cardboard box, tissue box as a stand, poster board for the backdrop, printer paper, and two flashes.

End results:

in the second one, the light form the flash is fucking with your colour balance and turning up blue ( i think) try putting a piece of colour paper in front of the flash to 'warm' the light to match the b/g.

In the first, the highlight from the front flash is too strong, i'd try diffusing it more, or even bouncing it off somthing.

edit: they're both good first tries. Im jsut trying to offer construcitve criticism to help you. there is way to much or going on in this subforum without any explanations. It helps me be a better photographer if people tell me why and what they like.

the backlight on the first shot is too strong, its causing some flare which is why you lose contrast on top of the subject..

theres also a color shift, probably because youre mixing flash with ambient light... notice how its redder on top and bluer in the middle...

and theres some (red) chromatic aberration on the tip of the lens shade

on the flower one i wasn't mixing the light though, it was a slightly different setup, what else do you think could have caused it?

i actually think its just that the white balance is off, period...it also looks like the image is somehow distorted, like its stretched..

I'm just going to point out the technical side of why this works. The reason why you are able to get white backgrounds is not necessarily because the paper in the background is white itself. It is because the backgrounds are being overexposed by the flash, and white happens to be easy to overexpose. The backgrounds will appear all white if you managed to go beyond values of 255+ for all color channels, Red, Green and Blue. On a histogram, this means you have severe clipping to the right for all of the color histograms.

We can make backgrounds of any color appear white by overexposing them with enough power.

well ya, but are you saying that that is what caused the color distortion on the flower picture?
