Is DSL supposed to slow down during 'peak' periods of the day?

i used to have timewarner cable and i never experienced slow connection speeds but ever since i changed to SBC DSL, the speeds are HORRENDOUS, like 700ms pings average or something.

and they claim 'high speed' and what not, this is BS, does anyone else have this problem?

is it just during peak periods, or the whole day?

(though i thought the whole point of DSL was that you dont have loss of bandwidth during peak times)

i heard it was the other way around, although i don't see how any internet service could be completely immune to slowdowns. the pipes are only so big you know.

No, it's not.

You can use traceroute to perform a quick test to see where the problem lies.

If you're getting high latency from the first hop (or second if you're using a router), there's likely something wrong on your end. You may have not put DSL filters on all your analog devices sharing the same line as the DSL service, your lines may be noisy, or you DSL modem may be defective.

If you're getting high latency beyond first hop, the problem is on your ISP's end. They may have oversold their bandwidth or are having technical difficulties. The best you can do is call them and file a trouble ticket.

i work full time, so when i come back and it's slow, on weekends, like this morning, sunday at 10:30 AM, it's ridiculously slow still.

in general, i get anywhere from 500-1000ms pings, it's pretty bad.

if someone is downloading on bittorrent, that ping goes even higher. (back with timewarner, the pings were slower but never to the point of 20 second webpage load times).

at the 'best' times, i get anywhere from 150-300ms pings (still pretty bad, i got faster pings on my 56k modem).

it's weird too, when it gets later, my speeds get worst, i.e. 10PM to 2AM, speeds are pretty bad also.

could be interference

call your provider and have them run a loop test

why wouldn't you call them to begin with? you already know something is wrong.

Do you know how far you are from the CO?

Even if you're pretty far, you still shouldn't be getting pings like that.

DSL is just a technology. It's not a measurement of quality... it's just as slow and/or fast as the ISP it connects you to. Nothing more, nothing less.

it's good now, but mornings, nights, basically peak hours are horrendous.

my tracert on cmd got me 500+ pings after the initial entry.

I'm a pathetic virgin.

call your ISP, but I feel sorry for you if you AT&T Yahoo or Speakeasy...

DSL gives the subscriber their own dedicated bandwidth(bandwidth controlled by the DSLAM of course), while cable shares bandwidth with a node from the hybrid fiber coax network - there's a reason why Cumcast/Time Warner or your local cable company caps their modems. I've never seen a slow down on AT&T DSL or my work connection with sonic.net, but Cumcast will slow down w/o warning.

Yeah, my Comcast never slows down without warning....in fact it hasn't for probably 4 years when I was only getting 1.5mbps

I get consistent 13mbit throughout the day.
