by what you get as a graduation gift.

It works on a spectrum:

the best friends: don't have to get you anything but if they do it will be nice/thoughtful
the friends by convenience: get you something to get you something.
the acquaintances: may or may not get you something, but if they do they don't pretend it's nice like the middle class.

FOR EXAMPLE:

One couple bought me a bottle of johnnie walker red for graduation (~$20). they're nice but i'll probably won't speak to them again unless I bump into them (unlikely because I'm switching continents but we're in the same field so you never know). It's cheap and I drank the whole bottle and have a slight buzz.

Another couple bought me a bottle of johnnie walker blue (~$200) (yes, i'm an alcoholic) and I'm pinching every penny to visit them in Toyko (from the US).

HINT: if you can't buy a good gift, don't buy one.

it's funny I got two bottles of JWB for graduation. It's a nice gesture but I don't even like it that much.

i opened one at the graduation party/open house and let everyone else drink it. the other will stay closed and get shipped I guess. I may bring it to Japan and drink it with the guy that bought it for me.

maybe my point was lost.

why place a monetary value on the gift, time is more valuable.

the best gift was a freshly made bottle (i'm not an alcohoilc, I swear) of personal whiskey.

he's looking for a business partner to get his distillery off the ground. that was probably the best gift because I helped him set up his first still out of used glassware from O-chem lab and stuff lying around our lab.
