Should I get a 17-40mm lens? How much is this stuff I already have worth?

I have a 350D and I have the kit lens as of right now and my friend has the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens and he says it's pretty good for all situations, so would you guys recommend this lens, too? I mostly do urbex and take random shots of things that mean something to me (read: not random shots) so would you guys recommend this lens?

also how much is this stuff worth? It's stuff my dad had for his old film Rebel but I'm looking to sell it...:

zoom lens:

flash:

teleconverter:

so how much approximately would those three items go for in D&S?

Thanks in advance!

Eh, you could probably cover the range with a different lens. Borrow it and see what you think though.

there's no reason at all to get the 17-40L for your 350D. It's a vastly overpriced mediocre piece of glass and there are better lenses for hundreds less. The Tamron 17-50 2.8, for example, is better in every single way except AF speed and build quality. It's also like $250 less.

i have the 17-40 and like it quite a bit.

my friend who has the 24-70 and the 17-40 prefers the 17-40 on his 1Ds. it's actually a nice lens. i think people bash it a little too much around here.

what do i know, i've only owned at least a copy of pretty much any wide in canon mount. i've given it more than its fair chance (three chances, actually). it's better than 16-35L mkI but that doesn't mean it's good.
glad it works for you. it didn't for me. it was nice in the center but the edges sucked. It also loves being stopped down to f/8-11 before it gets very sharp (and the edges get okay). It's NOT the best lens if you're a fan of using selective focus or like subject/background separation because even if you shoot it wide open the hyperfocal is very, very short. I personally hate in-focus backgrounds on wide shots for most things (not landscape) so that drove me to try the f/2.8 stuff and finally settle on the Sigma 20 1.8.

I really like my 17-40L. B&H has a good price on it now too.

the price, max aperture, and range make the tamron a pretty good deal versus the canon

yeah I think I'll do that next time I see him and try it out. what would be some good ways to find out whether or not it's a suitable lens for me?
