College [M]egathread 2007

Welcome to the College [M]egathread 2007
Compiled by: McGee

The objectives of this thread include:
1. Outline what materials incoming freshmen need
2. Give tips about college life to incoming freshmen and returning students
3. Allow [M]embers post what college they go to, to help network or answer campus-specific questions.
4. Answering any questions people have about college life. FEEL FREE TO ASK ANY AND ALL QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE ABOUT COLLEGE

Last year’s thread may be found here.

1. “Outlining what materials incoming freshmen need for college”
This section will detail what materials incoming freshman will need for college, ranging from appliances to clothing to food. Of course, some of these will vary from location to location (e.g. if you’re in the north, you’ll need winter clothing, whereas if you’re in Texas you probably won’t) so exercise caution when reading this thread!

Remember not to over-pack because you can always go home and get more stuff or go shopping and buy stuff you’re missing.

Big Stuff

Make sure you call your room mates before seeking out and buying these items. Chances are you’ll each bring about half – see what you and (s)he have before designating what needs to be bought.
What you will want to have:
  • Carpet – the plusher, the better. Spring an extra $20 or so on a carpet because it sucks having a short, coarse carpet.
  • T.V. – don’t forget the remote!
  • DVD player
  • Small microwave
  • Mini-fridge
  • Computer (don’t forget all necessary cords, a CAT5 cable, and a mousepad!)
  • Futon, loveseat, or couch. Make sure it’ll fit in your room before you bring it. Most people have the POS $100 futons from Wal-Mart – don’t worry, you won’t look weird with grandma and grandpa’s old loveseat or an ikea futon.
  • Rubber Drawers. These are made by Rubbermaid, Sterilite, and probably other brands. You can fit 3 or 4 high and still fit easily in the room or closet, great for storage. Can be used for food, office supplies, electronics, etc… very helpful item to have.

Nice, but not necessary stuff

Well, these things aren’t necessary, but most people will probably want them. Judge for yourself:
  • A doormat, if your carpet doesn't cover the whole room. Nothing sucks more than getting your floor all wet when it's snowed recently or something.
  • Alarm clock or other clock that can be seen in the dark
  • Speakers for computer (probably a 2.1 system, Logitech X-230s are very nice and only $35-$50)
  • A small fan. Wal-Mart has these pretty small Honeywell fans for $10, pretty loud though. Small oscillating fans are good at moving air, too.
  • *Maybe* a box fan to put up by your window. This will help a lot in circulating air, but if you bring one try and see if you can bring it home over winter, because you'll only need it for the first and last few months.

Hygiene

Ok, [M] tards. The days of living in your room without showering, brushing your teeth, or applying deodorant are over. If you want to make friends, that is. Pack everything (or buy it when you get to school) to ensure success:
  • Shower stuff – Bodywash and a loofah OR soap (make sure you get a soap container), shampoo (and conditioner if you use it).
  • A shower caddy and shower shoes. Don’t get a big shower caddy, get a small one that will fit your stuff in it and make sure there’s holes in the bottom so water can drain. For shower shoes just get a pair or two of flip flops from Old Navy or wherever. I say a pair or two because sandals tend to get stinky after awhile – but only worry about this if you wear your flipflops elsewhere.
  • Shaving cream/gel and razors. Seriously guys, don’t just bring a trimmer, it looks shitty.
  • Q-Tips
  • Toothbrush (Sonicare toothbrushes ftw ), toothpaste, and mouthwash.
  • A comb/brush and hair-styling products if you use them.
  • Face wash – I highly recommend Cetaphil by Galderma. It’s an expensive investment but a great face wash.
  • Deodorant (out of respect for your room mate and neighbors, DON’T FUCKING USE AXE).
  • Doesn’t really fall here, but I’m going to list it anyway: Febreeze. The one with the purple nozzle is the BEST. But seriously, Febreeze is great in college. It’s essential.

Medicine & First Aid

Well, I wasn’t sure if this deserved its own section or not. But I figured, why the hell not? Here we go:
  • Ibuprofen – you can buy this in bulk at Sam’s Club or Costco for much cheaper than at a normal store.
  • Tums
  • Immodium
  • Claritin and/or benadryl (BUY GENERIC) if you have allergies. Alternatively, benadryl can be used to knock you the fuck out if you’re having trouble sleeping.
  • Cold medicines: Dayquil, Nyquil, Mucinex
  • Caffeine Pills
  • Eyedrops
  • Cortizone cream
  • Lotion
  • Band-aids and Neosporin

Clothing

[b] The main thing to keep in mind is to not pack all of your clothes. If you’ve got shirts in your closet that you never wear, you’re certainly not going to wear them at college – leave. them. behind. Basically, you’re going to want clothing and shoes sufficient for the following categories:
  • Everyday wear. So basically shirts and pants/shorts.
  • Fall & Winter clothes. Fall – a hooded sweatshirt or jacket liner should keep you pretty warm. A hat isn’t a bad choice either – I HIGHLY recommend the Carhartt stocking caps. I paid $10 or so for mine (like oh so many other things in this thread) and it’s one of the best hats I’ve ever had. It’s SO fucking warm. Winter – A coat for sure. You’ll want a hat as already mentioned and gloves or mittens. You’ll probably be solid without boots or snowpants, too. This is when it’s nice to have a doormat, your shoes will leave salty water all over the entryway to your room without a doormat.
  • Gym clothes. A shirt, short, and gym shoes…
  • A swimsuit.
  • Formal wear. You’ll probably have a presentation 1-3 times a semester, so bring a nice outfit. It’s also nice if you’ve got a date you’d like to dress up for. Mine was khakis, a button-up, long-sleeve shirt and a sweater vest. Some people actually have suits, but I didn’t want to spend money on one.

Bedding

I wasn’t going to make a section for this but realized I probably should. This is a pretty big list. Keep in mind your bed is probably Twin XL
  • Sheets. I really recommend Bed Bath & Beyond for this. They’ve got 330 thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets for like $30, OR if you like REALLY soft, comfortable sheets, check out the Pure Beech sheets that they have. Made out of tree fiber – but surprisingly soft! This’ll also run you about $30, but it’s a lot more comfortable than those $10 piece of shit sets they’ll have at Wal-Mart.
  • A blanket or comforter. I got too hot with a comforter so I brought it home over winter break and came back with just a blanket. Find what works well for you – remember, you probably won’t have air conditioning and the heaters go fucking NUTS during winter.
  • A pillow. You probably won’t use two, so I recommend just bringing one.
  • A mattress pad. Most people get the egg-crate foam pads, I got mine for like :10bux: at Wal-Mart. There are alternatives though, like a “featherbed” – more comfortable, but also more expensive.

Food Items

Self-explanatory. Get food you want to eat, these are just some tips.
  • You'll probably want some pop, either to drink plain or to mix with booze on the weekends. Wait for a sale and buy it during the summer. 4 12-packs for $10 is a good deal, but there are better. Basically, just check out normal prices and figure out what's a good deal.
  • Breakfast foods are essential. Nature valley granola bars from costco or sam's club are a pretty good deal. I also ate bagged cereal (generic honey nut cheerios, fruit loops, etc.).
  • Buy in BULK. But only of food you know you’re going to eat. Otherwise it will sit in your closet all year, or in your fridge and it will spoil.

Essential Items

K, so… Here’s a list of stuff you pretty much need to have:
  • Towels – bath towel, hand towel, maybe a washcloth. Don’t bring more than 2 of any of these, you probably won’t even end up using the second. So just bring one of each.
  • A bathrobe. This is your discretion. It’s perfectly fine to walk to the bathroom with a towel wrapped around your waist, but I like a good bathrobe.
  • A laundry bag or hamper. Anything collapsible or not solid is a good bet. Most hampers are mesh with a wire frame so they can be squished. I’ve got this barrel-sized hamper that works pretty well, and when not in use can collapse into a big disc. Not that I ever collapse it, but it’s nice for transportation. Along with this you’ll want some laundry detergent and fabric softener (either liquid or dryer sheet form). Oh yeah, don’t buy the cheapest detergent there is – you’ll probably finish the bottle at the end of the year, so spring the extra $3 for something that smells nice.
  • A backpack
  • Office supplies. Steal ‘em from home or buy them. You’ll need folders, notebooks, probably a few thin 3-ring binders, pens, pencils (BIC mechanical FTW), highlighters etc. Most universities will let you print for free in their computer labs, so bring some printer paper and use their laser printers! Additionally, you’ll want a three hole punch, a stapler (with extra staples), and scotch or masking tape.
  • CALCULATOR. Graphing. Unless you’re taking tardmath and not planning on going into math or science, then you’ll just need a scientific one.
  • Duct or gorilla tape.
  • Power strip.

Random Stuff

K. Here’s all your little gadgets and “nice stuff to have.” You certainly don’t need to bring everything off this list, this is stuff that I think people would like to have or might be one of those things you really need that one time but don’t have it. So pick and choose!
  • Digital camera
  • Video game systems
  • iPod
  • USB thumbdrive.
  • Sticky tac and posters. Rooms look so bare when there aren’t any posters up. The company that owns allposters.com (at a lot of campuses, I’m sure other companies do it as well) have sales in the second or third week of school too, so don’t worry about not having any posters.
  • Umbrella – if it rains you’ll want one of these. I got mine for $5 at Target and it’s built real solid, no problems with it after numerous uses.
  • A white board and marker to put on the outside of your dorm room. It’s not a necessity, but it’s good for message tag and lots of people use these.
  • Sports stuff – a football, basketball, soccer ball, Frisbee, hackeysack, etc…
  • Flashlight
  • Can opener! This is one thing I ALWAYS forgot to bring back with me. The Spaghettios and soup I had bought just sat on my shelf all year.
  • If you drink, your own bottle of liquor to start the year off. Chances are you won’t have a hookup to buy for you until after awhile, so make sure you’ve got plenty to party with for the first few weeks. A handle (1.75L) of cheap vodka is pretty standard.
  • If you smoke weed, bring your piece, a lighter or two (BICS!), and like 1/8th+ of weed. Make sure you’ve got a good container for it though, most campuses won’t hesitate to call the cops if they smell weed. Make sure you smoke outside unless you want to try smoking in your room (NOT recommended), and only bring enough weed with you when you smoke so if you get caught it’s just a paraphernalia charge.
  • Cologne or perfume if you wear it.
  • You may or may not also want a set of dishes and silverware. Most people in my experience don’t use dishes, but you might want a plate, bowl, and definitely some cups. Bring some big plastic cups. I stole all my plates/bowls/silverware from the cafeteria, but cups are definitely important if you like to drink.
  • Instruments. Umm, unless you play guitar and you’re good at it, you’ll probably want to leave your shit at home. If you do bring it, please close your door for the benefit of your neighbors.
  • Dish soap
  • Super glue. I’d broken quite a few things over the year and every time I did I’d ask if anyone had super glue. No one did, and I’d always forget to buy it, too. But it’s really a sweet thing to have.

DO NOT BRING

K, so here are the things you’ll not want to bring.
  • DVD Collection
  • CD Collection
  • Video Game Collection
  • … Basically any collection of any kind.
I’ve got a dvd collection, but they’re all burns and they’re in a big wallet. If you’re really deadest on bringing dvds or cds, put them in a wallet. Otherwise they just take up space.

Is that lamp you’re packing going to be used? How about x item? PROBABLY NOT! Lots of people say to look at what you use for a week. (Bedding, toiletries, clothes, etc.) and bring just that. That’s nice but there is some stuff you’ll need in emergencies (e.g. super glue, immodium, etc.). Bottom line is: bring what you need. Don’t overpack. This thread is just a (great) guideline.

2. “College tips for freshman and returning students”
This is a very broad topic, so I’m not going to break it down into extreme specifics, just general topics. I’ve taken suggestions from other websites as well as the college preparation thread from last year and I’m just going to write them down as quotations (so pardon if there’s a huge list). Feel free to contribute any advice that’s missing. Remember that these tips are conditional and may not apply/fly at your university.
Ok, here are some tips that I’ve read previously and some stolen from other sites:
  • Find a group to study with. This not only allows you to make more friends, but provides motivation for studying.
  • Bring quarters for laundry, the machines are pretty expensive!
  • Get a good printer (or, some colleges allow you to print stuff for free if you provide your own paper. See if this is offered at yours.)
  • Learn to play ping pong and/or pool. This can help you get friends in the rec. room.
  • Get a local checking or savings account.
  • Don't procrastinate. This will bite you in the ass when you eventually get in trouble for it.
  • Memorize your social security number and other important information.
  • If you're religious, attend a church either near or on your campus. It's a good way to meet people who share the same views.
  • Only buy college-branded things like shirts. Yeah, a "Kentucky" shot glass or Maryland umbrella will be cool, but it's also a lot more expensive and generic stuff will do fine.
  • If you're a girl, walk with someone when it's dark. Rape++
  • On the same note, always offer to walk a girl back to her place if it’s dark and she’s leaving your dorm or something. It’s
  • Don't believe in stores claims that they'll buy books back at 60% of the price or whatever, because they rarely will. Check out half.com to buy books, and, even more importantly, sit through the class for the first week or two to see if you even end up using the book.
  • Save any book that relates directly to your major.
  • If you're invited to an honor society, join it, it looks good on a resume. (Do some research first, John Lennon [bggrthnjsus] claims that many are scams.)
  • Get to know your campus.
  • Learn to do your own laundry before college starts or you will be fucked.
  • Don't drive as a freshman. (Dependent on campus and if you can afford it or not. If you live in a college town, you should be fine without one.)
  • If you leave your dorm room even for a few minutes to go to the bathroom, lock your door. Dorm rooms are thief magnets.
  • Don't try and be best friends with your room mate. Since the pairing is usually completely random you probably won’t be best buds, but you can at least be mature and courteous to each other. Some people also need their space and don’t feel comfortable with their room mate clinging to them. Work out room “rules” pretty fast. If they’re too strict you can always change them later.
  • If you have a boyfriend or girlfriend, break it off before college. Long distance relationships seldom work and it will put extra strain on you.
  • Take classes where you are deficient. If you suck at math and don't need it for your major, TAKE MATH CLASSES. It's not high school where you need to just get through, skimp, etc. Take this opportunity to become well rounded and get good where you suck.
  • If you come into class late and the only open seats are in the middle, just sit on the floor instead of being discourteous.
These next ones are pretty important
  • Start buying stuff NOW! Lots of sales will happen between now and August and the cheaper you can get stuff for, the better. Additionally, some prices rise late-summer because retailers know people will be scrambling to buy supplies.
  • Call your parents, they are (hopefully) helping you pay for college or with other supplies – plus, they’re your family and they care about you. If they call, don't get mad, just give a quick report if you don’t feel like talking to them and then go back to what you were doing. They care about you and raised you for the past 18 years, don’t forget about them just because you’re busy partying.
  • Think about getting a job for extra spending money / to help pay your tuition. Campus ones are the best because you usually don't do anything which gives you time to study. If you're good with computers you can usually get pretty good pay helping people with problems or even working in a computer lab, otherwise you’ll probably get mediocre pay at a helpdesk or library position. Some colleges have job postings on their websites, check these frequently if you’re looking for a job.
  • On the same note, if you’re working a campus job, your supervisors will probably be very understanding if you can’t work a certain day if you need to work on a project or something, and most campus jobs are very flexible.
  • If you suck with computers, befriend someone who's good with them.
  • If you're good with computers, only service good friends’ computers and act like you don't know anything about them to everyone else or you will have people using you to clean spyware or other like that. Or, if you feel generous, you can do it and might receive some favors for your work (dinner, booze, etc.)
  • If you’re going to drink and/or smoke in your room, make sure your RA is cool first. And even if it’s tolerated by your RA, there is no reason to be a dick to everyone else in your hall – make sure that the drinking doesn’t get too noisy, and if you smoke put a towel in front of your door and blow out the window.
  • If you don’t want to go through the hassle of re-setting your alarm every day, just download this: http://www.ornj.net/citrus/ and set it to your daily schedule.
  • High school is gone like a light switch turning off at this point. Remember that. You have a totally clean slate and no one expects anything of you. You are not a geek, you are not popular, you are not the guy who got wasted and pissed on your friend’s couch: you are just a freshman. That is good. Be who you want to be.

Here’s a list of advice from the last two college threads. As usual, post it and if it’s good and not repetitive and I’ll probably get around to editing it in:
  • "College is actually hard. If you want to succeed you're going to have to do some work and do extra-curriculars, whether they're sports, volunteering, etc." - Skadebo
  • "Don't be afraid to tell people no. College kids are douchebag moochers to the max. If they want a ride, free computer advice, etc. just tell them no unless you WANT to help. Stand up for yourself." - deltabourne
  • "Lock your door while masturbating". - Sven Hoek
  • "Never close your door for the first two weeks unless you're gone, sleeping, or jacking off. You can meet more people this way." – Tanstaafl
  • "Go around and say hi to people who have their doors open. Also party in the first week. It's a best way to make friends, and everyone else is going to be nervous, because, they too have no friends. Do this before the cliques form so you can find your niche." – Sarekai
  • “Don't settle. You can pull a 4.0 if you have the right mindset. If you aim for a 4.0 and get a 3.7 cool. But if you're aiming for a 3.0 or 2.x you'll probably still miss.” - sybil
  • "Show up a couple days early and meet people. You can befriend hot girls by inviting them and their roommates to watch a movie with you." - arrrrpirates

  • "On the first day of class, sit down by a hot girl and ask her if it's the right class, then ask if you can sit by her. That way you're not a loser for being in the wrong class and you have a hot girl you can sit next to and befriend." – arrrrpirates
  • "Get along with your roommate even if he's a douchebag. You'll be living with him for a year so start it off on a good note." - Tanstaafl
  • "Make sure you're watching your alcohol intake so you don't wake up in the middle of the night and puke/piss on your room mate's shit." - Sven Hoek
  • "Don't be too trusting of someone. It's an easy way to get shit stolen, or raped!" -Augusttremulous (a.k.a. wr3kt)
  • "Be responsible with credit. Budget your money, keep track of how much you're spending on everything. If you have to, and ONLY IF YOU HAVE TO, get one credit card and only use it in the most dire of circumstances, or charge a small amount (like $25) that you know you can pay off." - WorldRunner
  • "Hey, girls - those older guys who are hanging out with you, drinking with you, etc. aren't doing it because you're cool, they're doing it so they can fuck you." -Inf (a.k.a. CockAZNsensation)

Don't buy a Wal-Mart/Target/etc. off brand bike - they'll be worse than something a fraction of the cost at a garage sale. Also, always carry a plastic bag that can fit over the seat, so that if it rains you can put the bag over the seat and have something dry to sit on." - NleahciM

  • "If you're going to listen to music while studying, make sure it isn't too loud. Listening to loud, tinny, headphones spillover sucks.” – nonhuman
  • “Talk to your professors. Get their feedback. I only did this when it was too late. Doing bad in the class? Talk to them and see if there is a way you can get yourself out of the hole.” – Cheech
  • “Wait until the first or second day of class to buy a text book unless you KNOW you need it. I've had so many classes where I'll drop 100$+ on a book and find out I'll never use the damn thing, and only get half back on the return.” – Neonlights
  • “College social life is nothing like highschool. In highschool, you have the social cliques: jocks, nerds, music geeks, etc. In college, theres only two: nice people, and assholes. Whichever catagory you fit in for either of those, you can be friends with someone else in that catagory. You will notice that all the nice people, doesnt matter what their interests are, will be nice to you, and you will be friends with them. The assholes seem to only get along with other assholes.” – Aellus
  • “Find out the ISBN numbers of your text books and buy them online. They're soo much cheaper this way. I saved over $200 this past semester.” – CrucialTK

3. “Gen[M]ayers and what colleges they attend”
This list is from an 05-06 thread and last year’s College [M]egathread. So, it may be inaccurate (I know for one that lots of these people are now alumni). I’ll leave them on just so you guys have the opportunity to ask them any questions specific to your campus, but if you really don’t want to be on the list and are alumni, I’ll take you off.
Post your college and I’ll add you to the list. If you’ve transferred or will be graduating (i.e. no longer attending the listed school) please post and declare so or you will remain on the list. Keep in mind this list is for the upcoming school year (07’-08’).
Also, make sure to Post your full college name including campus location if something like a state university with multiple campuses. Please do not use abbreviations. Please post and do not PM me, my box is only 100 capacity now since PMO is gone.
