It's yet another sponsored purchasing deal (similar to the free iPods thing), where they sell all items at half-MSRP. There are a couple of twists though:
- The sponsorship sign-ups usually require payment. It's not just "sign up for free trial then cancel the next day," you actually have to pay something in most cases (then cancel the next day). There are $5 trial magazine subscriptions and $120 wine club subscriptions for examples.
- No friend referrals required.
- You can't repeat sponsorship memberships, and there are only a few dozen sponsors total on the site. Some products require eight completed sponsor things; buyers are thus limited somewhat by the number of sponsors offered by the site.
Completing the sponsor offers can be expensive, but there seems to be a net savings in most cases. A black MacBook sells for $750 on the site, and selecting the cheapest offers costs $123, yielding a $627 discount (42%) from Apple's pricing. Using the most expensive offers reduces it to $599.
Now, has anyone tried this out or heard anything else about it? The free iPod (and HDTV, and other junk) stuff was pretty much legit AFAIK (albeit dodgy). Too good to be true?
