partition problems in Windows Vista :( (56k=sry)
ok, so today i decided to shrink the Recovery partition to 5 GB (from 10 GB) in order to make more room for stuff on my main drive. i was able to shrink it perfectly, and for whatever reason there was another 2 GB partition there from when i shrunk the recovery partition earlier. the result was this:
![]() as you can see, i got my recovery and main partitions right like i want them. however, the other 2 unallocated/free partitions don't appear to be in use yet i cannot extend my main partition (C .![]() the box is grayed out, HOWEVER, i AM able to extend the recovery partition if i wanted to. ![]() SO, what can i do to combine the two unused partitions and extend my C: partition with the extra 6.95 GB? it lets me make a new "simple volume" with the "free space" partition but with the unallocated space i can't even make a new volume of half it's full size, nor can i do anything with it. for example: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() i'm so fucking lost i don't know where to begin. i tried researching this crap online but still haven't found any help because, quite frankly, i have no idea where my problem is. THX GENMAY ![]()

Uh your 2 gig free space is sitting in an extended partition. Delete that and you should be able to add it to the C drive. Also the reason you cannot extend into the space you freed up from the RECOVERY partition is because you're tryind to add space to the START of a partition, which is impossible without moving the pre-existing data - and the windows disk manager does not have that capability.
Also, you can't format the free space because you already have 3 primary partitions + 1 extended - which puts you at the 4 partition limit. Your situation is a bit of a clusterfuck and there's a good chance you will fuck up your data if you keep messing around with it. Why don't you just get another drive? If this is a laptop (only reasonable explanation for a 100 gig drive) then at least use Parition Magic. It can do what you're trying to do with less chance of fucking it all up. It will try to relocate your current OS partition into the freed up space, and then it can add the remaining free space to the end of it. Though if you have the C drive almost full there won't be enough free space to perform the move or it will take forever.

this is a laptop. which is why every gigabyte counts . as for Partition Magic, would it allow me to combine both the free 2 GB AND the 4.95 GB so that i could have 3 partitions at least? i wouldn't mind having a 6.95 GB partition alongside my C: and Recovery partitions. either way, i would want a way to use this space, but i'm still confoozled as to what i need to do to combine those two unused partitions into the C: oneedit: i'm also reading about how PartitionMagic (the more well known one) is not Vista compatible. know of any that are?
