If it is your favorite car, do what needs to be done to keep it. $4,000 is nothing in the realm of debt. You said your parents were willing to help, so take advantage of that. Make a deal with your dad to have them pay the loan and give them the title in good faith. Once you can afford to pay them back, he'll return the title to you and all is well in the world.

The only way his parents would agree to this is if they are dumber than he is. He can't be arsed to pay back a bank loan when there are penalties and credit risks, his dad isn't going to get a fucking cent if all he has on his side is "good faith".

keep in mind dealers lowball like no other.
they have to make profit, and still sell it at market value....therefore they dont buy em for market value

straight-up: try to make a deal with your parents to loan you the $4k under the conditions that they hold the title during the term of the loan, and you pay them $4100 or so in return, for their time. Get a joe-job, pay that shit back as quickly as you can - and all is well.
