High School Diplomas?

So I have a GED. I'm not really proud of that fact and fucking around in High School has haunted me for the past six years. Mainly due to the fact that even the fucking military doesn't want to deal with you if all you have is a GED. So my question is this: does anyone have any insight as to weather or not a Highschool Diploma that can be had through the plethora of online schools is worth a shit? Because I know my GED isn't. Specifically in regards to Military service. I've been chatting with a recruiter for the past couple of weeks and the general consensus is my chances of joining are slim to none without a high school diploma and/or 15 college credits.

You're fucked. Online school is a joke. Stop being a slacker. As an American you are given so many opportunities that other people don't have. Get your head out of the sand, and probably booze also, and do something with yourself that you can be proud of.

Instead of going back, go forward. Go to community college and get an associates degree, then transfer to a 4 year program at a university and get a bachelors.

15 College credits is your option then. Get those, or an AA degree or something under your belt and noone will even care about the GED vs diploma.

Most community colleges will accept the GED for entry no problem

edit: also, quit being a dick oleo. If he put in the effort to get a GED, he probably isnt a lowlife like you're suggesting. Those people dont even bother with that

GED + SAT/ACT/state college en exam = equivalent
My buddy got kicked out for assaulting a cop (I had/have wonderful friends from hs that made some silly decisions) and he got his GED quick and was working and going to school pretty quick

AA is great and you're not going to put your HS on your resume anyway. Just make sure work exp is up top along with your other background or education thats in progress and you'll probably land something good

you stupid fuck, this isn't the general forum, the guy was asking for constructive advice and you tell him to "get your head out of [booze]?

OP: Try to shoot through a community college and take some credits that might actually be attractive to the branch looking to recruit you- If you know you're going to go for a specific MOS/AFSC, look at taking classes related to that area. Otherwise, take something useful like language courses. Don't just take them to take them- if you're going to have to pay for them, you might as well use the opportunity to make your portfolio look more attractive.

Additionally- I'm pretty surprised that the military is making the GED a no-go for you. I'm in the Air Force, and I know they generally stray from putting in guys with GEDs into high-level jobs, but if you do well on the ASVAB I can't imagine it's a real deal-breaker. I enlisted with a four-year degree from a well respected school and a 99 on the asvab and I had to jump through more hoops then my buddy, who BARELY graduated from high school and scored a 54.

Most universities will treat you the same as an applicant with a diploma if you take SAT/ACT subject tests along with the SAT/ACT, usually two of them related to your field of study.

edit: just reread the OP, you should be able to get 15 credits done in like two semesters at a community college, shouldn't take you that long.

yeah, most people who "party" during school are usually involved with drugs or alcohol.

best things for the op to do is - get serious about life, go to a community college and do really well, then transfer into a great university.

I'm finding it surprising that the military isn't even giving you a look with your GED. I read a year ago that the military was lowering their standards to allow GED guys to come in just to keep up with quotas. Maybe they changed the system, but what are you shooting for in the military? Have you asked if there's anything that will take you, like the Reserves?

I'm going to recommend something no one has mentioned yet. You can get 15 credits with one semester at a community college. If you have the motivation to work in the military, you can hack it for a semester. But what I also recommend is that you shop around and look for a college that has an ROTC program. ROTC programs offer people scholarships if you commit to serving time in the army, and since that's what you're going for anyway (you'll be an officer, don't know how you feel about that), it could really give you a leg up in both the army, and in getting a good education. Talk to your recruiter about this.

Remember all those stories a few years ago about the military not meeting recruiting goals? When's the last time you heard that?

Recessisons are great for recruiting. If you can't find a job the military looks pretty attractive. Enlistment and reenlistment bonuses are being cut too. Waivers of any kind are getting pretty rare. When I reclassed to Infantry last year one of the other guys who was a recruiter said they weren't accepting anyone with a GED or any kind of criminal record. I don't know if they raised the ASVAB requirements but he said they also stopped taking most medical waivers.

take an english class while you're at it... learn the difference between "weather" and "whether". i can see why the military recruiter is telling you that your chances are slim to none of getting in.

ones of the guys I used to have in some of my classes started in your boat.
He only had a GED. He went to a CC and got a semester under his belt. Joined up with the National Guard.
He then used his GI or whatever its called money, to go to university. Last year he graduated and immediately got his commission.
