Phone number reverse lookup

I'll keep this short. My buddy's apartment was robbed on Friday night while he was out at a show. Had his brand new MacBook Pro stolen. Found it on CraigsList yesterday with a phone number & email address. Guy has a bunch of obviously stolen items listed on CL along w/ my friend's laptop.

What's the best way to go about getting more information on this guy? I remember there were some free services for looking up information w/ a phone number, but I forget the websites. If I want to pay, which is the best service?

Thanks!

You think so?

My house was robbed once, too - except I was home and they beat the shit out of me and put a gun to my head. I found my stuff at a Buy/Sell game store and the detective didn't go over there until a month later. Obviously the tapes had been rolled by then and the license on file for the items was a fake (big surprise).

He has filed a report and will be providing them with this information on Monday, but honestly, police in major cities don't have time to deal w/ shit like this.

How is the stuff "obviously stolen"? How do you know it is the stolen macbook and not any one of millions of other macbooks?

contact the seller wanting to buy it.. and arrange a meeting somewhere where it is public.

I would open it up and check it and make for double sure that it is in fact your buddies laptop.. and if so, you and someone else should go along with him, and if it is.. just steal the damn thing back.

What exactly is the seller going to do? report a stolen laptop?

edit - if he has something with his name and serial number on it (don't they come with warrenty cards or something?), then by all means take that with you... If it was me though, i would take two other guys, double check and make sure.. and then beat the T total hell out of the theif... But I am pretty backwoods.

About a year ago, we were working on a job and this steel worker (he was the foreman of his crew) stole one of our demolition saws and pawned it.. The job Supervisor found a pawn ticket for our saw like two days later that fell out of the dudes truck.. I had to drive up there and tell that foreman exactly what was going to happen if he didn't go get my goddamn chop saw back, and it involved me threatening to damage his ugly ass face and then pressing charged.. The supervisor was pretty unhappy about the whole ordeal as well and reassured that if it wasn't returned then the guys company would never get another job for his company (pretty big outfit for both of them)..

i'd go check if it was mine and if it was i'd disable the person.

some things don't heal no matter what. Never walking again is a small price to pay for being a leech on society. You think that guy wouldn't walk if the cops caught him? like 20% of the cases are actually convicted.

bring you and a couple of big buddies and have them wait in the car.

Cell phone number. He already sold the laptop. We know it's my buddies because everything he has up on craigslist is stolen and it's the exact same model number being sold only with the laptop and power cord (the only things that were taken).

Contacted him on another sale (a Canon D20 he's selling for $200) and are meeting up with him soon. We'll see how this goes.

what exactly are you going to do? rough him up? then what? If you're so certain he's selling stolen goods, why not report him to the police. They will investigate and pursue this if it's that obvious. Investigations take time. We just had a local high school kid arrested for this exact thing, stealing items and selling them on ebay/craigslist. It took a couple months of investigation, but he was caught.

All his information will still be handed over tomorrow morning. Just going to get some info from him directly tonight.

The police wont do shit by the way. They don't track down phone numbers, they don't track down craigslist leads. Really they just hope they catch the guy in the act. They will recover some of your stuff, but you won't know it. No matter if you gave them serials they will not alert you. Not on purpose you know, they just don't bother to check. Too busy. They will sell whatever they find at auction.

If you are lucky the perp will get caught burglarizing something else and get arrested. Then, if it is like Fulton County, he will spend a few weeks in jail, be let out on probation for the 5th time and go right back to burglarizing homes for crack money.

Sometimes justice is better dealt with by people who don't have to "play by the book".

Im sorry to tell you, but there are other people in your town with the same laptop model number. You keep saying you know all of the other stuff he has on CL is stolen. HOW do you know this?

Right - but how many are willing to sell that $3200 laptop for $1100? The day after my buddies was stolen? With only the laptop & power cord? (the thing is like 2 months old you're going to tell me you don't have ANY of the CDs or a box or anything?)

Or how about a Canon EOS 20D camera for $200?

It's not that hard to tell that shit is stolen.

I didn't end up going out last night to meet up with this guy but some other people did. Interested to hear how it went.
