Sweet, dude.

What ignition setup are you using?

Whats an ID?

If WB = Wideband then yes a wideband.

I see your point about the abbreviations, you win.

Im sorry, I agree with you. it was late last night and I didnt have the energy to type.

For those who are not familiar the Megasquirt is a standalone EFI computer. Since its inception it was always an open source piece of hardware. Software used to tune, datalog, flash and etc is all free. The MSQ files which are the megasquirt configuration files are readily available online for a variety of different engines which makes getting started with megasquirt much simpler then before. Originally designed only for fuel control with the addition of new open source firmware called Megasquirt and Spark Extra and some hardware modifications the megasquirt can be used to trigger a variety of different ignition systems. The modifications themselves are car specific and I found mine at the website that I ordered the kit from.

The kit itself which contains all the parts you need to build separated into easy to read baggies costs 193 bucks. Instructions are available on the websites and are easy to understand provided you can read and take it slow.

They also have a device called the megastim which is a device that lets you bench test your megasquirt during the construction process(verify that various circuits work after construction) as well as a full test and programming after you are done building. Its basically an engine simulator and it will simulate all the functions of a car. Well worth the 43 bucks it costs unassembled.

Now. In order to not cut into the car and make everything as neat as possible I built my own boomslang. Boomslang is the company that makes harness extensions for a variety of imports on the market. They sell them for 100 but I made my own for the price of the ecu connectors and some wire which was like 20 bucks + time.

Now in my particular configuration I have opted to go ahead and install my megasquirt in a parallel configuration with the factory ECU. Why, because this way I dont have to worry about building circuit to control the minor things like the fans, and the idle. Also, running in parallel allows me to continue using my A/C. Only the megasquirt PNP has a circuit to control the A/C and I didnt want to investigate how to build one.

The other major benefit of running in parallel is that I still retain my ability to pass emissions every year. Seeing as how this car is OBD2 it has to be plugged in, running a standalone megasquirt will never let me pass emissions.

One of the other benefits of using a megasquirt is that I no longer use the MAF to compute how much air the engine is getting instead it uses a MAP sensor like so many hondas do from the factory. In conjunction with an air temp sensor that is all it needs to do the fuel calculations.

Wasted spark. Its going to trigger the factory ignitors and batch fire the injectors.

No, not really.

Its actually a workaround. Let me look it up.

edit: Its not using any of the typical ignition driver circuits. I honestly haven't asked how its doing it but from my understanding its just using the LED's as the triggers. The modification basically turns two leds into the triggers for the ignition, when they light an ignitor fires.

IIRC 2 of the 4 LED's should be lit at all times. I haven't delved to heavily into Megasquirt but I'd like to give it a whirl when I've got some time on my hands. Let me know how things turn out for you.

Normally no.

The three LED's have their own functions. One shows warm up enrichment, one shows injector firing, and one shows that acceleration enrichment is on. With this modification you are correct, two are permanently on.

I'll keep you guys informed. Right now on the miataturbo forums we are discussing if it would be possible to share the AIT with the factory ecu to get rid of the maf entirely because at the moment i need to keep the maf to not throw a check engine light. If I can dump it, it would make wiring a breeze.

Anyone know how to emulate a MAF with an AIT? The problem is the maf bases its calculations on current draw, not resistance like an AIT.

AIT aka air intake temps?
Good luck with that one my man
Edit: if you just want the car to run while on maf (prolly still wouldnt pass emmissios) why not just give the ecu a constant voltage from the MAF wire. Then at least it will run, but I dont see how you can use an AIT to emulate a MAF, i mean the more air going into the system, the more voltage it reads. An IAT is going to vary by like 5% while you are driving regardless of how much air is going in.

I must not understand

Basically I want to share the AIT signal with the stock ECU so I dont get any check engine lights. The options are either running both or one thats shared. The maf sensor sends two signals, air flow and temperature from one unit. I would like to send the ECU the AIT information from the AIT Sensor while just giving the ecu a dummy signal for the airflow volume using something like a resistor between the signal line and a ground. At least this is what we have concluded as a first experiment. The benefits is that I can reuse the stock wiring for the AIT sensor, and not get any check engine lights.

Whats really is that my mother and father finally came around to accepting it. Nice to not have to hear him say "I just dont see why you have to do this" or her say "so is this thing going to make flames shoot out of your ass". Now they accept it as just another way for me to express myself.

So, they're at the stage where they just roll their eyes at you and say nothing, now?

Speaking of you, when are you gonna do the driver mod?

Nah, they showed way to much concern at first because I have no experience with this at all and they just dont want me to destroy the car...... again. My father even walked in yesterday and hes like "why are you even bothering with this shit, theres a Z3 for sale at my job, go buy it"

and
