whoa thoes depo champers are and I thought the ones I use at work were pretty cutting edge.

pics for reference:

used to be used for manufacturing semi conductors, now we're doing depositions with new "super" conductors, although i can't tell you what we are trying to accomplish that is, until we do it $$$

I'm a materials science grad student at PSU, and the fact that this guy is wasting $2-3k of funding coating his iphone in our Nanofab facility absolutely appalls me. There are graduate students who are strugging for funding, and there's someone degassing his grimy iphone in the SEMs, wasting our money, and then trying to turn a profit off of it. I'm not sure the owner of that chamber and/or the director of the materials research institute, where the chamber is located, would be very happy with this "research."

Besides the fact that this guy is wasting our funding, he is in no way a scientist. Read his descriptions of "electron microscope spectroscopy" and what he calls "X-ray diffraction spectroscopy." Besides the fact that he's invented new names for both of these techniques, his description of both is entirely wrong. You don't apply a 20kV bias to your sample in the SEM, you scatter electrons that have been accelerated through a potential of 20kV. A detector collects these scattered electrons, and an image is formed. In energy dispersive spectroscopy ("X-ray diffraction spectroscopy"), you measure the characteristic X-rays emitted following a scattering event. There's no liquid nitrogen cooled X-Ray tube on an SEM, because there's no x-ray tube. The X-Ray detector is cooled.

Perhaps the worst part is that he treats all this as groundbreaking research. I'm not sure when the last time I saw a journal paper entitled "Ruining Expensive Equipment for Personal Gain and Calling it Science for Attention." Hopefully he'll be held responsible when the pumps in the chamber and/or electron column in the microscope are ruined from his nasty iphone being in there. I'll put $5 on a bet that he didn't even wear gloves.

There's so much fail in his postings, if only the general public knew about it. Those may just be the worst SEM images I've ever seen. I would jump off a bridge before I would show those off as something I did. None of this is even groundbreaking! I regularly use an SEM before breakfast and while I don't work in advanced coatings, there is much more interesting stuff going on in materials research.

It's going to be interesting to see how this turns out at PSU. Someone using a deposition chamber like that can't and won't be overlooked. Unfortunately for the "investigator", PSU owns all of his intellectual property. Any significant income he'll see from this will surely be recovered by the University. I see he's posted a price now. God help him if he's planning to try to sell these things out of the Nanofab. Additionally, if he tries to patent this technique or procedure, the postings on Gizmodo and all over the web will assure it doesn't happen.

I may just sound sour, but you would be too if someone was taking jobs and money out of the hands of you and your friends.

To you, Paul Knight (if that's who you actually are), you should be ashamed of yourself and the nonsensical pseudoscience that you spew.

What kind of proof do you want that I'm a PSU Materials Science grad student?

Of course it's my first post, I registered so I could figure out who this guy is.

We don't want proof of who you are. We don't care who you are. You should find the nearest cliff and kindly step off it.
