Call me a tard, but I am not familiar with diesel engines. Why do the pistons have bowl shaped reliefs in them?

why they have that specific shape is a patent of VW but it seems to deal with the injection area - the weird shape is exactly where the injector is in the combustion chamber and that would be the quench area - i'm sure that shape has something to do with proper combustion becuase of the direct injection.

also even crazier is that thep iston comes full up to flat deck height (well within MMs) and the head has no combustion chamber as it is totally flat (that valves actually stick out a little) so in essense the room in the piston is actually the combustion chamber

God DAMN at all those wires...I'd be terrified to have to install that into a car.

Aside from that...is that gray going to be the finished color or is that just a base until you get some other materials?

finish color, its a pretty good dark gray, that last round of pictures didn't do it justice (the rear wheel one is the best shot for idea of color) the sun was fucking up the whole deal. I obviously have to retouch all the areas I had problems with - mainly the doors as they all fell over but other then that the color looks good the rest of the way around the car

I don't know if that's a VW patent... because I know the diesels out of the old Toyota Landcruisers also had combustion chambers in the piston. I think the Cummins 5.9 is built the same way.

i'm told the exactly layout is VW specific but most diesels seem to do very similar to get hte insane comp ratios they need. VW just has the weird pattern to it, thus why the pistons are WAY TOO GODDAMN EXPENSIVE.
