I'm a pathetic virgin.

I've heard things about those Bosch VE pumps on Cummins engines...

alright, this is day 1 - tomorrow is the day it's set to be cited and the penelties start adding up FAST

we started early - boss actually kicked me out early since I've been so tired from going ot bed at 2am every night this week.

check all the timing, it's spot on, TDC mark on crank, crank is sitting flat & #1 lobes are up . injector pump is locked in the 'real' hole

try again, no go

sort out the starting system so we aren't ghetto jumping the starter - turns out we don't have the clutch pedal switch plugged in - we had the brake switch plugged in.

bypassed the clutch switch relay. cranks like it should

get the glow plugs going, found out we had a disconnected wire in the engine bay - what we thought was the coolant bottle plug was actually a glow plug. also had a loose wire at the relay. all squared away, we've got plugs

got everything down to only one code left
17970 - Quantity Adjuster Upper Limit Attained

watching vagcom we couldn't get the timing to come up or the quantity to adjust at all. not sure if the part just needs to be cleaned or what. would have pulled it out but it requires a special socket to get it out - will probably just cut a flat head into it tomorrow and pull it out if it looks likely that it'll fix the problem.

got ready to put it in the garage after another day of failure

and then I pulled off the big axle as it has to be clearenced to work to install the small axle on the passenger side and the wheel bearing exploded on me

so I can't even get the damn thing in the garage as even after I tightened down the wheel bearing to try and force it back together it wouldn't go, so now I don't have even a rolling rabbit

so the two pics I have tonight are an empty garage and a non-moving rabbit

tomorrow i'm going to get all the wires from the ecm to the injector pump, hopefully find a fault there and fix it...

intercooler will be here tuesday

I guess i'll get window seals and lighting put in until I can get the motor running...
still need to finish the brakes and fab the clutch stuff

Still technically have one more day to meet my deadline - the car isn't going to be driving around tomorrow but damn if I don't want it running tomorrow! I've still got a little bit of hope left that that can happen tomorrow, we'll see though.

better than sandals. a wrench or something falling on socks/work shoes will absorb the blow better than bare feet.

Timing has to be checked and adjusted when the car is hot, above 80c at least.

Quanity adjustment...not sure.

A quick google - BTW I don't know anything about VW engine management, i'm just trying to help:

http://tdiclub.com/TDIFAQ/TDiFAQ-8.html
Quote:
Vehicles which have modified engine control systems, especially if a chip and a tuning-box are used together, may experience a phenomenon which has been called "warp field collapse": at full load and generally higher engine speeds, the engine will abruptly go into a reduced-power mode. Investigation of trouble codes with a VAG-COM will generally find a code set which is related to the quantity adjuster upper limit. The problem is that too much fuel is being requested! The solution is to back off the requested amount of fuel, generally through de-tuning the tuning box which hopefully has some manual adjustments that can be made.

^ Seems to make sense. You've reached the upper limit, have to back off (or remove the limit)
And you did say that this engine was already chipped
