age: 20 name job and describe what u do: Lab consultant, I fix macs in a lab on a college campus, and teach people content creation apps. how long have u had it: 1.5 yrs 1-10 with 10 being the most how satisfied are u and why: 8, it's pretty much a sinecure, and I enjoy what I do what do u enjoy the most and why: see above what are the biggest frustrations and why: people who shove floppies into zip drives, people whi have never used a computer. describe the process in attaining it: Neopotism++, had a friend with the job how does your job (not) meet expectations about what this type of work should be like: It doesn't. I do what I would expect to do in my position why would u recommend (or not recommend) it to ur children: Easy, fun, and you learn things-- if you're into content creation. Can't really go wrong unless you are really antisocial are u where u hoped/expected to be in life because of ur career: Not really a career, per-se, but I did expect to have some computer-related PT job in college, and I do describe how your satisfaction/lack of it affects ur life: I am satisified enough to enjoy going in each day. if u had to start over why would you choose/not choose this career: I'd choose it because it interests me, and I get paid to do things that are easy if u could give 1 piece of advice to young adults considering their career options today what would it be and why: Do something you'll enjoy

age: 22 name job and describe what u do: Information Management Leadership Program (IMLP) @ GE Medical Systems how long have u had it: 3 Months 1-10 with 10 being the most how satisfied are u and why: 10 - Very Challenging - Pays very well - HUGE growth potential - Management level experience right out of college - Real responsibility and accountability what do u enjoy the most and why: see answers above what are the biggest frustrations and why: offshore teams do not always communicate as well in English, but can be resolved by learning foreign language. describe the process in attaining it: (attaining job?) Campus job fair, lead to internship interview for GE Appliances, did a really good job as an intern, applied for IMLP @ GE Appliances with the understanding that I would turn it down if i dont have any job offers in the fall from firms in Chicago. They offered it to me anyway, made it compelling by paying me $$$....but also referred me to another GE business closer to home (milwaukee). Interviewed again for IMLP @ GE Medical Systems, got the offer the next day, joined 2 weeks after graduating in December. how does your job (not) meet expectations about what this type of work should be like: It meets or exceeds every one of my expectations....in all honesty. Since I interned w/GE, I knew what I was getting. Get paid REALLY well ($56,000/year + bonueses for performance + benefits) but work EXTREMELY long hours - sometimes 70+ why would u recommend (or not recommend) it to ur children: recommend it if they are very focused on technology MANAGEMENT and not vocational Technology skills such as "programmer" or "database administrator" or "MCSE" - all of which are USELESS jobs at GE because of our outsourcing model. are u where u hoped/expected to be in life because of ur career: At this point, I am beyond where I expected to be. I have 17 direct reports under me...I manage budgets, timelines, projects AND TECHNOLOGY all at once. This is a tough program with high expectations, but you are rewarded for it. describe how your satisfaction/lack of it affects ur life: Long hours hurt personal relationships, but I am able to afford the "finer things in life" when I need them. I am able to take weekends with my girlfriend away and spend the time enjoying the wonders that are in a committed relationship. if u had to start over why would you choose/not choose this career: I definitely would. I love technology, but realize that there will always be programmers better than me. This way, i can utilize my business accumen and knowledge to advance myself and my company. if u could give 1 piece of advice to young adults considering their career options today what would it be and why: Never take the easy way out or look for the quick fix. The road that is most rewarding is often the most dangerous. Dont be afraid to fail, but make it a habit to succeed. Execute on your committments and above all, hold yourself to highest integrity standards. Embrace change in all its form, be a gamechanger in your role. Support your superiors in public forum, and address issues with them in private. Pick yourself and OTHERS UP when times are rough.
