Places to eat in Kansas City

Italian:

Garozzo's - Excellent intimate or family oriented Italian food. Infamous for their Chicken Spiedini.

V's Italian Ristorante - Excelent Italian all aound. Great price, And the Rum cake at the end.

Mexican:

Manny's - My favorite Mexican restaurant. Ever. I love the atmosphere. I love the chips & salsa, I love the food.

Margarita's - Another excellent Mexican restaurant, more contemporary atmosphere. Great chips & salsa, great food.

El Mariachi - My favorite hole in the wall. I mean, It's truly Mexican. And not elegant mexican. But their food is AWESOME and it's cheap.

Burgers:
Hi-Boy - Hi-Boy is my all-time favorite hamburger joint. In my eyes, there is no comparison. Extremely thin patties of beef with melted cheese on them. Combine that and their special sauce, you can't beat them. Old 50's style drive-in style place.

Mugs Up - Another drive in, but lesser known. Serves ground burgers, very good, but not for the weak of stomache.

Americana:
54th Street Bar & Grill - Kind of like Applebee's, but more authentic. Serves even better food. Waiters work very hard and make good money.

Cheesecake Factory - Pretty high-end, especially on the the Plaza. Great food. No, awesome food. And of course, the cheesesteak.

Barbecue (of course, what else?):

Zarda Barbecue - Awesome barbecue, my local place. One of the best in the city, which means it puts it as one of the best in the world.

Fiorella's Jack Stack - Infamous. One of the best if not THE best barbecue in the world.
Gates Barbecue - Of course, Gates made KC popular for barbecue and is usually synonymous with barbecue in KC.

Anywhere else, KC is BBQ king, you won't find bad barbecue.

Steakhouses:
Hereford House - Excellent steaks. Period.

Marina Grog & Galley - Very High end steakhouse, set on Lake Lotawana. The food is superb, famous for how small and secluded it is. They recently added a new even higher end restaurant, where the food is at least $100 a plate, but is only for lake residensts. Luckily, my best friend lives at the lake.

Golden Ox - Located on the famous stockyards of Kansas City in the West Bottoms. You won't find a better KC Strip, because they invented it.

Japanese Steakhouses:

Gojo - Traditional Japanese teppanyaki dinner, have to make reservations to get in here. Their food is awesome. They also serve yellow sauce (hollandaise with soy) with the rice. Awesome stuff.

Kobe Steakhouse & Sushi Bar - Food is nearly identical to Gojo, just much newer and contemporary atmosphere. I've been on a weekly habit of this place lately.

Garozzo's is the king for sure. Jasper's and Cascones both deserve a mention.

My personal favorite is Ponak's on SWBlvd for the awesomeness of their marguritas. After a pitcher of their marguritas i can never remember what the food tastes like but it must be pretty good. I live close to the Prairie Village Salty Iguana and they have damn good food.

best burger in town was the Westport Flea Market but I guess that's going out soon (Hooters incoming) Second place would be Winsteads imo.

heh so true. I'm not a gates fan but it's mostly their sauce i don't like. My local spot is Oklahoma Joe's. Also one of the best in the city yet newer and with less history than many. I went to Zarda last month and it was awesome. Arthur Bryant's is considered the Holy Grail of BBQ by many of my family and friends. Their pork is unbelieveable.

Steakhouses:
Hereford House - Excellent steaks. Period.

Marina Grog & Galley - Very High end steakhouse, set on Lake Lotawana. The food is superb, famous for how small and secluded it is. Too many great steak houses to list. BBQ joints and steak houses are a formidable presence in KC.

I would add:

Seafood:

McCormick and Schmick's If i could afford to eat here more often I would.

Copeland's of New Orleans Excellent cajun food in Overland Park.

Bristol Bar & Grill Loved this place when they were on the Plaza and the new Leawood location annoys me. Still great food though.

Alot of great places listed.
For burgers, Hays is excelent. They are up north at the corner of Antioch and Vivion. Great stuff and open 24/7. It's not much for atmosphere but the food is really really good. I have heard great things about their chilli but have not tried it. They also have good breakfast food.

Add Arthur Bryants to BBQ and there's one other place in the market downtown but the name escapes me right now.

I will have to find out...

It's the place with the "4 day smoked baked beans" that are absolutely drool-worthy.

Their ribs are very good too. Jakes doesn't sound right... It's attached to a bar... a real hole in the wall but absolutely delicious.

I personally can't stand Arthur Bryants, it's awful in my opinion.

As far as Mexican, there's a very, very good place that's been open for more than 50 years now. Acapulco Mexican Restaraunt. My family has been going there for almost 25 years now, and there's a very good reason. Order the chile verde or if avacados are in season, order the guacamole too.

Italian, how can you mention italian without mentioning Lidias Italy. Perfect place to take a girl out on a date, order the Pasta Tasting and you'll be set.

ITALLIAN:
Macaluses (sp?) in westport by d'bronx is the best itallian in town, hands down. the atmosphere is also great, i took my girlfriend there and boy did i get bonus points later! its a very small place, very friendly and very very cute for couples.

STEAK HOUSES:
J Gillberts - VERY GOOD, much better than the places listed above, but very expensive also. A meal can run $50 a person there easily. but the steaks are very very tender and full of flavor.

Jess and Jims - the only location i know if is in martin city, mo. but they are a family owned joint that has very good prices for a really good quality food. its a great place to take large groups, or just a couple. the resturant has a good atmosphere.

Everetts - also really good, and much cheaper at $25-30 a person. their steaks are really well cut and very tender.

MEXICAN:
Ponaks - cheap and fairly good food.
Mannys - alright food, very americanized. they also charge per bowl of chips and salsa now there, which imho is very lame. their food is very bland i think.

The women fight for my delight.

I went to Lenexa/Overland Park KS for a wedding this summer. I spent the last day in Kansas City, and I ate very well. I can recommend Arthur Bryant's Barbecue (I ate a slab of ribs) and Jess & Jim's Steakhouse (I had a tender filet with A+ taste; the steak soup is good, too). Also, try Boulevard Beer.
