What should the avg Genmayer do and stay in NYC for 3 days?

This will be my first time in the US. After spending 2 weeks in MD for work, I've got a fri afternoon, sat, sun & monday morning to do stuff starting from the 18th July.

What part of the city to stay? I'm the kind of guy who just likes to walk around and look at random stuff. Find a cool atmospheric bar to have a beer, find a good pizza joint, etc. I want to be fairly central in the places to see to cut travelling time down but I don't want anything too flash, $100 a night tops? Maybe backpackers with own room style accommodation.

Things definitely I want to do:
1. See Alex Grey COSM gallery in 542 West, 27th St NYC
2. Jump on Staten Island Ferry
3. Go to top of Empire State Building
4. Buy Rockband to take back home to AUS - best place to buy this from? Duty Free at the airport maybe?

From gmaps, it looks like I could do 1, 2 & 3 in the same day, what about the rest? Coney island, Long Beach, walk around Brooklyn? Take in a Yankee or Met game? not the biggest baseball fan, but I like my sport if there is a good atmosphere. Central Park worth a look around?
For shits & giggles, I might even go to Leonardo, New Jersey to see the Quick Stop from Clerks. Thats the kinds of cool shit I like.

Any places to stay away from? those CHUD's still running about?

Here are some must-drink-at beer bars:

The Gingerman: http://www.gingerman-ny.com/ (seems to be the best)
Blind Tiger Ale House: http://blindtigeralehouse.com/ (really good, free wireless internet access)
Hop Devil Grill: http://www.hopdevil.com/
d.b.a: http://www.drinkgoodstuff.com/
David Copperfield's: http://www.davidcopperfields.com/

Excellent, that 30 free things is a good start.

FAO Schwarz looks like a must as I loved Hamleys in London. I've always wanted to play on that big Piano.

Can't forget Times Square and that Gingerman bar looks pretty sweet. NY Library for the Ghostbusters setting.

Looks like Manhatten would be the best spot to stay as everything on my list so far is on the island.

Any more ideas?

Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge at night to Brooklyn, turn around, walk down old fulton st and eat pizza at grimaldi's and go to the waterfront, say hi to london through the little telescope thing and look at the city lit up at night.

That sounds like there will be a great view of the city, cheers.

What's your budget like?

When I went to NYC, I went all over. I got a pass on the subway for a week and used it like 15 times a day. I checked out local restaurants, drank in random bars all over, and pretty much stayed on Manhattan for the most part. One thing that was pretty fun was going to the MET and looking at cool art, artifacts, etc.

I went to Grimaldi's, wasn't impressed, but i'm not a big pizza person at all. Went up the empire state building, kind of boring, if you've ever been up a tall building before. I didn't even go to Times Square on my last visit, because I went before and realized there's really no point to it lol.

yeah, definitely get a weekend-pass metro card... it'll save you tons, unless you plan on taking cabs everywhere

i've posted this before, but here are some good things to check out:

Restaurants:

Golden Unicorn (for dim sum) in china town
Peking Duck House (for peking duck, lol) in china town
Queen of Sheba (for ethiopian) in hell's kitchen
Any restaurant on 6th street (A.K.A curry row - indian) in east village
Bobby Van's (for steak - decent price) near wall street
Peter Luger's (for steak - stupidly expensive, but excellent -- if you go here bring lots of cash since they don't take credit, and don't forget to order the bacon ) in brooklyn

For cheap broadway tickets go to a TKTS booth... but try going to the one at the South Street Seaport since the lines are very short compared to the Times Square one... and you can swing by while checking out Wall Street/Financial District

Definitely check out the Natural History Museum... MoMa, MET, an any others you can squeeze in...

Arrive in NYC tomorrow - getting psyched about it all. Thanks for all the tips.

These are my main notes, plus I've got a copy of Frommers NYC Walking guide on my blackberry so I'm fully prepared.

1. See Alex Grey COSM gallery in 542 West, 27th St NYC
2. Jump on Staten Island Ferry - south ferry subway
3. Go to top of Empire State Building - ticket already bought
4 FAO Schwarz Fifth Ave and 58th Street
Times Square 42nd and Broadway
5. Brooklyn Bridge at night - high st station
6. mets/ny yankees game if I can fit it
7. Clerks: 58 N. Leonard Avenue in Leonardo, New Jersey - if i can find a way there
8. NYC Library: Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street - on some of the walks
9. central park: 82nd Street and Fifth Ave & 75th Street and Fifth Ave.

I'm freakin out a little about tipping - it is a completely foreign custom for us Aussies.
Whats ettiquete for tipping in bars ie per drink or at the end of the session? How do you do it if you are paying by CC?
