Nothing like forced motivation

So, I've been waiting for this day to come: the day when I start my power build on my 300ZX. But, as usual, the timing is shitty.

I was driving home on Friday from picking up a pizza for the family, when I hear a loud pop, followed by smoke. A *lot* of smoke. A "We have elected a new pope" amount of smoke.

I figured I had blown off an intercooler hose, but when I pulled all the panels back, everything looks seated well, except that I'm intercooling a fair amount of oil on the driver side.

It probably also blew a head gasket, but that's really neither here nor there, as the engine has to come out either way.

Of course, this happens the weekend that I tear into my 240Z to rebuild the suspension.

Shit. I'm down to the family truckster (an Infiniti G20), and my bicycle.

The hell of it all is that, close to 2 years ago, I bought (and put on the shelf) a set of JWT 530bb turbos (garret GT2554R), and the fueling to match, but now I'm torn: the next set bigger is cheaper than I paid for the 530bb's (Z1's GT600R, a garret GT2560R). Going with those means I should probably step up to the next larger injectors, too (740cc/min, as opposed to the 555cc/min I have here).

Finally, I need new intercoolers, too, as the existing ones are stock, and probably filled with pieces of the compressor wheel.

lots an ebay fire sale to fund the new parts:

Hope all goes well. I am currently building my GTIR SR20 for my B13 sentra. It hasn't been easy for me either. I am in NM too.

it would appear my decision has been made: Z1 GT600Rs, 740cc/min injectors, Z1 sidemounts.

Woohoo!

I have been wanting a 300zx for about 6 years now...They're so damn rare around here, and every time I find one it's beat to hell and back. One of these days though...

I saw your thread about building the SR20 in your barracks room. You should move that shit off base, dude.

I ordered the new turbo kit, and bigger injectors, and got them Friday.

I dug the SMICs out of my shed and, found all the t-bolts and couplers.

The GT2560R is a *lot* bigger than the GT2554R. I wish, in retrospect, that I had taken pictures of them side by side. I'll certainly do that once I pull the stockers off the car.

Great news, everyone!

I did a compression check today, while tearing it down to pull the motor. Everything is about average for a motor of its age, except for cylinder 5, which is about 50 PSI short of the rest. I'm still reasonably sure it's not the head gasket, but I'll get to check before I ship the short block off to be rebuilt.

lol i know what you're talking about. Smog check failure resulted in a head rebuilt, 3" mandrel bend downpipe, and 13b turbo's, datalogger, and intimate details of how to test every sensor, wire, and ECM on my $3000GT
