At 6'0", 185 lbs, is it normal to look like a total....

fat ass with my shirt off?

About 2 years ago I was in damn good shape. I worked out consistently, 3-4 nights a week, all free weights, chugged protein shakes like it was my job and ate a pretty good diet. I was by no means ripped but I built up a decent amount of muscle (went from about 155-180 in 5-6 months). I looked "built" in clothes.

But I've gotten lazy since then and haven't worked out much and have probably lost all of that muscle. I haven't really gained weight though - I hover between 185-190 lbs - but I look like absolute SHIT with my shirt off. I have a gut and moobs, and it's horrible. My roommate is 5'9", 220 lbs and looks better with his shirt off than I do. His weight is evenly distributed.....mine just looks like a skinny guy wearing a fat suit. I've got another friend who is 200 6'3" and looks like a bean pole.

I've already cut back on beer, fast food, etc and am restricting my calories in an effort to lose this......but is there any chance I could have some sort of adrenal problems? Cushings? Or do I just have absolute shit genetics for storing fat?

I'm almost exactly that--6'0" and between 185-190. I definitely have a gut but I wouldn't say I look terrible. Though, it's likely we have very different body types...I can't even remember when I was ever 155. (I got down to here from about 215 way back in high school)

Manboobs is definitely a genetics thing. I'm lucky/unlucky enough to have an extremely small chest, so I've never had a problem. But I have a friend who can never seem to fully get rid of his (He's a couple inches shorter, maybe 15lbs. less, and is clearly in better physical condition).

Stop looking at weight as any sort of measurement. Get a bodyfat test and you will probably see where the issue is. There are plenty of people that are 6' that weigh 150 lbs and that works for them, but for me (I too am 6') I would have to have a negative bodyfat percentage to weigh 185. Go with what works for you in terms of your body makeup, but don't worry about your weight. The only thing that will make any difference will be bodyfat, and that might increase or decrease your weight depending on how you get there.

Sure. If you haven't been lifting, started drinking a decent amount, eating crappy food, you'll lose muscle and get a gut. That's what happens to guys, and the beer gets to get stored in the gut for various reasons. You didn't say how old you are, so it's hard to say if you're a little genetically unlucky or just been eating too much.

I've been all over the goddam map with weight and body fat %, at your height. Was 185 lbs and soft in height school, dropped to 170 pounds and lean doing sports freshman year and stayed around there until summer of sophomore year. I gained 45 pounds of fat over the summer and the spring off-season, hit 220 pounds and looked like shit and stayed that was most of junior year (my worst season in sports too not surprisingly). Dropped 30 pounds before senior year, was a nice lean 190 for awhile. Starting drinking a decent amount in grad school, got back up to 215 and fat. Then I started lifting and dieting, lost the fat and gained a shitload of muscle, now I'm 230 lbs and lean.

Moral of the story: The scale means nothing, it's all about the BF%. There are light fat people, there are huge lean people.

Same problem. No worries man. I'm 6'4" usually between 185 and 200 lbs. According to the BMI I should be a shining beacon of manliness. Nah. Have a gut, no muscle definition. I USED to though. Two years ago I worked out quite a bit and I was 185 and had some better mass. Then you let yourself go and the muscle goes away and the fat replaces it. So same weight, different stuff.

You yourself notice you look fat and your first thought is it an adrenal problem?

Chances are if you look fat it is probably because you are. The solution to which is to be less fat. Problem solved.

How to be less fat? Eat better and exercise more. You say you used to. Do it again. Once more- problem solved.

Do not overcomplicate a simple issue.

I mean... you pretty much answered your questions with this post.

Old you: Worked out consistently, ate relatively healthy; looked good.

Current you: doesnt work out, doesnt eat as well; looks bad

Are you with me on this one?

I was always under the impression that 6'0" 185 lbs was a fairly average weight that didn't result in looking like a fattie. I now stand corrected.

I'm just used to much less.
6'3" - 175 lbs w/ most of that weight in my legs is what I was used to as a footie/tennis player back in the day
I pretty much looked like a hybrid of Michael Ballack and Shinsuke Nakamura. Big up top, but bigger legs

I'm comfortable with my weight actually. Any work I put it over the summer will be gone by Spring of '10.

Thats not necessarily a bad weight for your height, but clearly due to your current lifestyle your bodyfat % is too high. Fix that and be a winner.

I've hovered around 185-190 for a year and a half now, but I've gone from being pathetic to decently built but I'm still a little chunky. Its all BF%, but right now I'm trying to cut fat over the summer and get down to 170-75 lbs by adding more cardio, better dieting to my schedule.
