Volvo T-5R returns to the Ring after engine rebuild
Early this year I broke my engine on the 'ring. More specifically a number of circumstances contributed to the conrod bearings on #2 and #3 to get oil starved and torn up. They then ruined the crank and allowed the pistons to hit the head. It was pretty messy.
Took a few months to get it back together but I got the head flowed, put in forged conrods and fitted a GT2871R T3 instead of the journal bearing T3/T4 I was running. I got it dyno'd a few weeks ago on a load dyno with proper cooling. I had already been on a dynojet with no airflow worth mentioning (365whp) but the curves looked very nice I thought. A flat power curve was what I was going for ![]() 412 BHP, torque is in Nm, works out to around 400 lb-ft max. ![]() Anyway back to the Ring, they had opened up the monday at short notice which meant all the brits had gone home already. This left the place nearly deserted, in beautiful autumn weather probably one of the nicest drives of the year. Only downside was that the track was very cold (close to freezing) and rather dusty. My R888's did not have the grip I was used to and the car was very understeered (well, more than usual). Which led to me running wide in some corners I've never run wide in before ![]() To make things worse on the last lap my crankcase ventilation tube that is attached to my intake pipe came off, though I only realised that later. Oily crap all over my engine bay. But on track it translated in occasional very lean conditions (leak was post MAF) and stumbling/backfiring. Simply lifting the throttle and getting back on usually cured the problem and made AFR settle back around 12:1. But it wasn't very elegant as you can see in the video. I also had to keep 1 eye on the AFR gauge which isn't in the most visible spot so I found myself not exactly where I'd want to be on the track a few times ![]() I logged GPS speeds with racechrono and a 5 Hz GPS receiver from Qstarz, to give you guys an idea of the speeds and hills on the track. The BTG lap time was 8:04.7 sec which was better than expected I thought considering the things "wrong" during this lap.
I should add I reduced boost to 20psi (as low as it would go) lowering the power to approx. 360 bhp. I guess it is capable of sub 8 minutes, but finding the track warmer with the same amount of traffic is going to be difficult.

I hate Volvos....but goddamn.
![]() Did you build the engine yourself, or did you get it done somewhere? Is that the 20V 5 cyl? Isn't that thing FWD, too? I swear, if/when I ever make it to Europe, my primary concern will be to convince you to give me a ride around the ring in that boxy beast of yours! ![]()

That's a beastly volvo. Good luck getting the AFRs right, sounds like a fun project.

Built it with a friend of mine, mostly stock parts aside from the conrods. It's a 2.3L 5-cyl 20V turbo. If you're around here some time and the weather allows, sure ![]()

You're only as old as the woman you molest, er... I mean feel.

Congrats on getting her back together. So how is 20 pounds the least boost you can run? You seriously have a 20 pound wastegate spring? If so, you sir are my new hero.
Nice run!

I'm actually running the softest spring available in the forge actuator. 7 psi. Trouble is that the wastegate hole on the 5-bolt exhaust housing is a tad on the small side and it boost creeps from 5K rpm onwards. Using an ATP UIWG. Since it's not too far off my target boost and I really, really didn't feel like taking the turbo off again (and apart) I've decided to leave it like this for the time being. "full power" mode is 25psi.
