How to get Adderall? Feel awkward asking doctor.

I've always had a hard time focusing. High school and college, I could never take notes. I'd always zone out, even when wide awake, and start day dreaming, thinking about random things. My mind was always racing. If I even attempted to pay attention, I'd half be thinking about the person lecturing, half about other random shit.

eventually I almost never went to class. i'd be the type of guy pulling all nighters in the lab reading the textbook and coding the night before.

Social situations, same dealio. Some friends have described me as "aloof" in social situations, others always give me shit for interrupting halfway thru the convo and saying, "Wait, what/who are you talking about?". This harms me in new social encounters, cause unless it's a topic i'm REALLY familiar and interested in, I feel like my mind is never even halfway there. Even in drunken parties where there is no real conversation, I feel I'm always thinking and stressed and distracted, for example while at a bar, while playing drinking games.

In school, no biggie. Now I feel this is really affecting me in the real world. Unless I'm actually leading a meeting or presenting, I am zoned out half the time. While attemtping to code, I'll even turn off all facebook/wikipedia/CNN/other distractions. But I'll just space out. then zone back in, work for a solid 5-10 min, then space out again. I get my stuff done, but my efficiency is probably only at about 25%.

i'm also addicted to coffee. i must go out for coffee at 4-5 pm sharp, come back, thats usually when i'm most productive... 5-7 PM. It is almost obsessive.

Never been to a shrink. Always had a stigma against it. Go to yearly physicals, get the usual test done, in-n-out, nod "i'm fine" to everything my doctor asks.

SO.... I recently bummed some adderall off my roommate. Might be placebo effect, who knows. I felt focused and intense like never before - going around to people's cubes, asking for help, giving advice, collaborating (something I'm usually too lazy to do). Work insanely late hours, which gives me a happy feeling/momentum - i'm actually motivated the next morning to wake up early and get to work and finish what I left.

ditto for social situations. Two beers and an Adderall XR seemed to have the equivalent effect of a good day + several more beers + a Red Bull. Confident, energetic, more sociable.

I'm 24.... how do I bring this up to my doc without looking like I just want to score? I've never been diagnosed with

I timed myself the time it even took me to post this. 20+ minutes.

Got lost in the music playing in the background, got me thinking about the band, about other bands, some friends into the music. Grabbed a beer. Alt+tab, wikipedia'd said brewery, wasted a few minutes there. Spent few more minutes real-life loll'ing with roommate.

That sounds like what adderall does to me. And I certainly don't need adderall to function well. Are you sure it's not the whole speed/god complex that makes you think it's so much better?

If I were to do cocaine right now I would feel "focused and intense like never before". I suggest you talk to a doctor, one who specializes in ADD/ADHD and simply discuss with him what is going on with you. He will be able to better direct you and aid you in getting the help you need. Self medication is not the route to take.

Personally I don't recommend adderal. But if you tell him the first 3 paragraphs you just told us, he will give you a 'script for sure.

ti89 it sounds like you may actually have a genuine problem, but don't convince yourself adderall is the solution just yet. Many behaviors can be fixed with therapy, self control, and sometimes drugs.

Going into a primary doc's office and remotely saying "More adderall pls" is going to end the appointment quickly. Doctor's see drug seeking behavior 7 days a week. Try to get a referral to a specialist, like Detroit mentioned.

I went to a psychiatrist because i was feeling pretty fucking depressed and shitty, I took a bunch of tests and he told me I had chronic depression, social anxiety disorder and severe inattentive ADD. I was basically an emotionless zombie for a while but he gave me a choice between 3 different drugs for ADD.

I went with Strattera, it takes a few weeks to kick in but I feel like a new person. As long as your honest you shouldn't have a problem with the doc prescribing you something.

Don't pay much attention to what your experience doing Adderall did for you (and it almost certainly wasn't placebo effect, the stuff is an amphetamine after all), it'll make anybody more focused and able to be productive, that's why so many kids use/abuse it to study. Better question is how able you are to function without the drugs. If you legitimately can't focus well and aren't just lacking study skills, maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to take it. But get it through a doctor, not a drug dealer.

Just see a doctor... talk to him about it. I've taken the stuff for a year or two on and off. Personally, i don't like how it makes me feel in general, but I do notice i'm significantly more focused and productive when on it.

If the doctor thinks you are just out to 'score' he'll probably give you some tests but more than likely he'll start you on some sort of regiment on a minimum dosage.

Don't get locked into adderall... its a fairly old drug and newer ones that fit your needs might be around now.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Don't worry, I don't abuse it, nor buy it via drug dealers. One of my roommates has a legit prescription, well had - he stopped using it - and I've only bummed off him a handful of times. Couple of times at work, once during an all day music fest while drinking, once while snowboarding, and once when we came back from a Half Dome hike and wanted the energy to still go out to the bars at night.

I'm not the type of guy to buy pills off random dealers (nor do I know any). So if I do use it, I'd want to get it legit from a doctor.

Yes... I know it's an amphetamine. Yes, I know people can correct it via better habits and conditioning. I've tried, just doesn't work well enough for me. Besides, isn't almost everything we take a crutch? Taking a Red Bull or other energy drinks which are loaded with caffeine, taurine, guarana, and B vitamins? Similarily you could say, "Well, you should have gotten a better nights sleep/better diet/learn to be more alert without OTC stimulants".

I understand the effects, it's not something I'd use regularly. Only days when I need to crunch and work hard, prepare for an important meeting. Or recreationally when going say Vegas, New Years, or when I have the huge weekend to-do list of errands/chores.

So, do I just go to my normal doctor, tell him my problems, and he prescribes that or something else? Does he refer me to a shrink? Can I just look up shrinks and make an appointment myself or are they by referral only like most specialist doctors are?

Also, will it be covered by insurance... the doctor visits? I always thought seeing psychiatrists was a ridiculous by the hour type fee?

Um, i don't know about your normal doctor prescribing it, I went to a psychopharmacologist for mine.

Your coverage is going to depend on your insurance. Call your company if you aren't sure. Adderall can get pricey without insurance.

I've been on adderall for a year.

Here is my advice:

Don't take it. In the end it isn't worth it. When I first started taking I was like WOW this shit is awesome. I never gotten such good grades in my entire life. I was working for 6-7 hrs STRAIGHT nonstop with 100% productivity (this is nearly impossible without an amphetamine or cocaine). After all that good stuff I got the crash and couldn't sleep. Ok no biggie.

As time went by I saw myself taking more and more adderall (your first time taking adderrall is like your first time smoking weed, it won't ever be as good as the first and you'll always have to INCREASE your dose to get the same effect). Now I know people say amps are the most addictive substance in the world (and I can really see it for some people) but I can say with 100% honesty I was never addicted. I only used it for school and never used it for recreation (there's a reason why Iím mentioning all this).

Anyways, the more and more I took (since you have to potentiate it) the worse and worse the side effects got. And let me tell you the crash from adderall is the WORST FUCKING CRASH EVER. Seriously it felt like a freight train hit me. You CANNOT sleep no matter how many Tylenol pm's you take, you WILL NOT eat and you will be the most miserable person in the world. The anxiety is insane and these are just the mental side effects. The physical are pretty dangerous too. I started to lose weight, started to look like shit since I rarely slept (and adderall won't help you if you're sleepy) and I started getting chest pains too. While you're on adderall you'll notice your heart rate reach up to 150 sometimes after just climbing the stairs. My resting heart rate would be around 90-100.

Basically imo it isn't worth it. Some people might look at me and think wow this is just an extreme case (and it might be) but as I mentioned earlier, I only took it for school, and even then it would only be during exams (so maybe 3-4 times a month).

Even after having said this there are some people in this world who take 60mg a day get 3-4 hrs of sleep every night and continue to take it and it seems as though they are fine. However, I would never fuck with it again.
